Connecting the World to Laos: Online Seminar

Dear Valued Donors and Supporters,

We are excited to share an update on our project, "Connecting the World to Laos."

On April 20th (Japan Time), we held a global online seminar connecting the world to Laos. To mark the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, the theme was "Zero damage from landmines – 80 million cluster munitions contamination in Laos and Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) to protect children’s lives." The seminar aimed to raise awareness about Terra Renaissance's unexploded ordnance (UXO) risk education and other activities in Laos, as well as to create an opportunity for supporters and beneficiaries to connect.

The EORE of the Day

The event featured a brief lecture by our speaker, Mr. Iimura, followed by a live broadcast of an EORE session from the field. Participants were able to witness firsthand how children learn about the dangers of UXO. The education goes beyond lectures using signs, incorporating songs and movements to teach children about the risks of explosive remnants of war. Mr. Iimura provided a summary of the local language used in the session for the participants.

Interview Attempt with Beneficiary Community

Thanks to the incredible cooperation of our local staff, we were also able to organize an interview with members of a beneficiary community.Despite having a significant amount of land contaminated by cluster munitions compared to Cambodia, Laos often receives less attention than Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries. Nevertheless, we remain committed to our work for the future of this nation. Your interest is crucial in creating a brighter future for the children of Laos.

Your Support Makes a Difference

Your interest and support are truly making a tangible difference in creating a brighter and safer future for the children of Laos.

Finally, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who participated in the online seminar and to those who generously purchased support tickets. Your commitment allows us to continue this essential work on the ground.

About Our Speaker

Hiro Iimura: Born in Tokyo in 1968. After completing his master's degree, he worked as an immunology researcher at a private company for four and a half years. From 1999 to 2000, he engaged in volunteer work in northern Thailand, supporting children from ethnic minorities. From 2000 to 2012, he taught Japanese through holistic education (project-based learning), managed international exchange programs, and conducted environmental conservation and science education at a private school in Bangkok. From 2013 to 2018, he worked as a Laos program officer for the international cooperation NGO IV-JAPAN, managing vocational training projects. Since April 2020, he has been in charge of Terra Renaissance's Laos program, implementing UXO risk education and providing livelihood support in Xieng Khouang Province, Laos.
