VENEZUELA: A DAILY MEAL FOR 400 DEPRIVED KIDS

En un esfuerzo por aumentar la transparencia y construir una cultura de apertura y aprendizaje, GlobalGiving invita a las organizaciones sin fines de lucro a compartir una historia en la que hayan probado algo nuevo y no hayan obtenido los resultados esperados, así como el aprendizaje de esa experiencia y cómo han mejorado. ¿Qué pasó?

En el 2015 la Fundación compró una bebida nutricional para los 400 estudiantes con el fin de asegurar que todos los alumnos recibieran una alimentación completa que incluyera hierro y vitaminas. Esta bebida se empezó a dar a todos los estudiantes como complemento de su comida diaria. Poco después, la escuela recibió la visita de un equipo de médicos especializados que, después de examinar a los niños y conocer la ingesta de la bebida nutricional, informaron a la Fundación que no se debía administrar a todos los estudiantes, ya que no proporcionaba valor nutricional adicional a los niños sanos, a diferencia de los que padecen de malnutrición, y por lo tanto, solo debería haberse otorgado a estos últimos.

 ¿Por qué ocurrió?

Esta situación ocurrió por falta de asesoría nutricional profesional. Se asumió equivocadamente que si se complementaba el almuerzo con la bebida nutricional se estaba asegurando la nutrición balanceada de todos los estudiantes. 

 ¿Qué acciones se tomaron?

A través de los médicos especialistas se obtuvo la muestra de los niños que presentaban malnutrición y fueron éstos únicamente los que recibieron el producto. Se dejó de dar la bebida nutricional a los niños en condiciones óptimas. A consecuencia de esta situación, se creó una alianza con una organización médica especializada quienes de manera recurrente realizan evaluaciones a los estudiantes. Entre los exámenes médicos que se realizan están: medidas antropométricas (talla y peso) y exámenes de sangre (anemia). Con base en los resultados obtenidos un asesor nutricional diseña los menús de los almuerzos que se ofrecen a los niños.

  Resultados

Durante el último año escolar, el 75% de los estudiantes a los cuales se le han practicado las pesquisas antropométricas y sanguíneas, han crecido sanamente e incrementado su peso y talla acorde con su edad. Solo el 5.57% ha presentado anemia.

  Aprendizaje

Los aprendizajes de esta experiencia fueron:

1. Evitar suposiciones: tomar decisiones con base en indicadores confiables que ayuden a garantizar un óptimo impacto social.
2. Asesorarse con profesionales en cada área:  para hacer mejor uso de los recursos.
3. Estar al día: Evaluar constantemente y tener suficiente flexibilidad para adaptar las iniciativas a las nuevas situaciones en la medida de lo posible.

In an effort to increase transparency and build a culture of openness and learning, GlobalGiving has invited nonprofit partners to share a story of when they tried something new that didn’t go as planned, and more importantly, what they learned and how they improved. Here is our story. Enjoy!

What happened?

In 2015, the Foundation purchased a nutritional beverage for the 400 students in order to ensure that all of them received a complete diet that included iron and vitamins. Shortly thereafter, the school received a visit from a team of specialized doctors who, after examining the children and learning about the intake of the nutritional beverage, informed the Foundation that it should not be administered to all students, since it did not provide additional nutritional value for healthy children, as opposed to those suffering from malnutrition, and therefore should only been given to the latter.

Why did it happen?

This situation occurred due to lack of professional nutritional advice. It was mistakenly assumed that if lunch was supplemented with the nutritional drink it was ensuring balanced nutrition for all students.

Measures taken

With the help of the specialists, we were able to determine which of the children were malnourished and which were healthy, and these children continued to take the nutritional beverage, whereas the healthy ones stopped taking it. As a result of this experience, a partnership was established with the specialists consisting of regular testing and evaluations for the students. Some of the tests they perform are: anthropometric measurements (height and weight) and blood work (to check for anemia). Based on the results, a nutrition advisor designs the menus for the student’s lunches.

Results

Over the last school year, 75% of the children that were tested have achieved a healthy height and weight for their age. Only 5, 57% presented anemia.

Lessons learned:

The lessons we learned from this experience are the following:

1) Avoid assumptions: Decisions must be taken based on solid indicators in order to guarantee optimal social impact.

2) Seek guidance from professionals in the subject: in order to make the best use of resources.

3) Stay up to date: Perform continuous assessments and be flexible in order to adapt to new events whenever possible.

Las 9 curiosidades que no sabías del comedor de la Escuela Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga en Petare.

1) Los 400 alumnos ayudan a recoger la mesa. Diariamente, después de finalizar su almuerzo deben recoger sus platos y cubiertos.

2) Los alumnos de 4to, 5to y 6to grado lavan sus platos. Cada grado se va rotando esta responsabilidad mensualmente ¡Son todos unos expertos lavando los platos, cubiertos y vasos para dejarlos listos para el día siguiente!

3) Disciplina al lavarse las manos antes de comer. Cada estudiante hace una parada obligatoria en el baño para lavarse las manos.

4) Dar las gracias. Antes de comer rezan y dan las gracias de corazón por los alimentos que reciben a diario.

5) Merienda de la mañana. A media mañana reciben una ración de fruta o jugo de la temporada.

6) El Concurso de Cocina Anual es un premio muy deseado. Cada año se realiza un concurso de cocina entre los estudiantes que se inscriben: “Jenaro Come Sano”. Los concursantes presentan su plato a los jueces, explican qué ingredientes utilizaron, cómo lo hicieron y el origen de la receta ¿El premio? ¡Un curso de cocina en un instituto culinario!

 7) Equipo de la cocina. El personal de cocina está compuesto por 11 señoras de la comunidad. Muchas de ellas tienen hijos o nietos estudiando en la escuela. Reciben la supervisión de un chef que va diariamente, da las pautas del menú balanceado y enseña nuevas técnicas de cocina para aprovechar al máximo cada ingrediente.

 8) Taller de panadería y repostería para el personal de la cocina ¡Ahora elaboran su propio pan de sándwich, canilla, pan francés con orégano, pizza y hasta masa danesa!

9) Alimentación también significa enseñar a alimentarse bien: Estudiantes y padres se benefician de los talleres dictados sobre educación nutricional. Allí aprenden sobre los diferentes grupos alimenticios y se les introducen diferentes sabores, texturas y olores. Se les motiva a comer frutas y vegetales a través de obras de teatro representadas por ellos mismos. A los padres se les enseñan estrategias nutricionales, técnicas culinarias, cómo combinar los alimentos y degustarlos.

9 Little-known facts about the Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga’s school cafeteria. 

1) The 400 students help clear the table. Every day, the students pick up their plates and utensils when they are finished eating their lunch.

2) The 4th, 5th and 6th grade students wash the dishes. All the grades swap dish washing duties every month. The students are experts at cleaning dishes, cups and utensils and leaving them ready to use for the next day! 

3) The students must was their hands before eating. Each student makes a mandatory stop in the bathroom to wash their hands.

4) Give thanks. The students pray and give heartfelt thanks for the food they receive every day.

5) Morning snack. The students get a piece of seasonal fruit or juice every morning.

6) The annual cooking competition is a very coveted prize. The students participate in an annual cooking competition called “Jenaro eats healthy”. The participants present their plates to the judges, explain the ingredients they used, how the dish was prepared and where does it come from. What it the prize? A cooking course at a culinary institute!

7) The cooking staff. The cooking staff is composed of 11 ladies from the community. Several have children and grandchildren attending the school. They are supervised by a chef that goes to the school every day, gives the guidelines for a balanced menu and teaches new techniques to get the most out of every ingredient.

8) The cooking staff participated in a baking workshop. They are now able to make different kinds of bread, pizza and even Danish dough!

9) Nutrition also means to teach how to eat well: Students and parents benefit from nutritional education workshops. They learn about the different food groups and are introduced to different tastes, smells and textures. They are encouraged to eat fruits and vegetables through theatre performances they act themselves. The parents are taught healthy eating strategies, such as how to pair foods, food tastings and culinary techniques.
