Alimentar a 400 alumnos en inflacion / Feeding 400 students in inflation

By Carmen Elena Ibarra | General Manager

Versión en Español / Spanish version

1)    How much food does the school cafeteria of Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga School require to feed 400 students with a balanced diet?

2)    How much money does Fundación Madre María Luisa Casar need to buy this food? How has the economy inflation influenced this?

These are the questions frequently asked about the school cafeteria, and we would like to share the answers with you:

1)    Amount of food: To feed 400 students monthly, approximately 3,050Kg of food are required (quarterly: 9,150 Kg approx.)

2)    Cost of food: In the first quarter of 2018 the foundation required US$4,671.25; for the first quarter of 2019 it was US$17,211.81. The increase was 268%, it is almost the fourfold in just one year due to the economic inflation in Venezuela.

The chart below shows the breakdown of the monthly consumption for each food group. The 1st quarter of 2018 and 2019 expressed in US dollars, and the percentages of increase for each food that the Foundation must purchase every month to meet one of its main objectives, which is to provide the 400 children of Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga school a balanced diet that allows them a healthy physical and intellectual development.

The inflation in the country presents multiple challenges, which influences the acquisition of food to provide the usual lunch and snack to the students daily:

  • The rise in prices is increasing even more and faster
  • The difficult acquisition of food due to shortages of product in the market
  • The increase in the frequency of purchasing products and services in US dollars and the unfavorable and volatile exchange rates
  • The estimation of the continued inflation during the rest of the year

The Foundation has quadrupled its efforts to face these challenges. We have been able to continue offering our Venezuelan children the care they deserve; not only in terms of food, but also in terms of education and health.

We will respond to your concerns and we are very grateful for all your support. Your continued contributions have enabled us to provide for these children for over 20 years. The Foundation and the students of the Jenaro Aguirre Elorriaga school thank you for this as you have transformed the lives of thousand of children and given them a future.
