Situation- Years into this emergency, millions of Venezuelan refugees and migrants in the region still cannot afford three meals a day; do not have safe and decent housing; face hurdles in accessing medical care; and are unable to work to support themselves and their families. Instability, difficulties in accessing basic services, xenophobia and discrimination, and lack of documentation have forced tens of thousands to continue embarking on dangerous journeys, including through the perilous Darien Gap or crossing the high mountains between Bolivia and Chile. Regularization efforts by many countries across Latin America and the Caribbean have therefore been a crucial gesture of solidarity for refugees and migrants from Venezuela.
IOM Actions - Thanks to the generous support of Citi Foundation, USA for IOM is identifying gaps in labor demand in host countries and empowering migrants to fill them with skills training and tools for entrepreneurship. Through entrepreneurship and job training, USA for IOM is supporting sustainable livelihoods for Venezuelan migrants and local communities., leading to a better integration of Venezuelan migrants into their host communities. By contributing to host countries’ economies, Venezuelan migrants are seen as motors of local development, combating xenophobia.
