VHF Donation of Tablets and Laptops to Public Schools in Jamaica

By MacFarlane Okonta | Project Leader

Our effort to Advance Education through Technology in public schools has consistently shown sustained and improved student growth. In St. James Parish Jamaica, VHF donation of tablets and laptops in October 2021 to over 150 students has tremendously influenced student’s attendance and academic performance. Students of the Sudbury All Age & Infant School would have been unable to attend and participate in online classes as well as complete assignments because they had no access to devices.

Since the donation of these tablets, student’s attendance and class participation has been consistent. Here is an example of the impact of our donation to  two students who were beneficiaries. Omarion is a very focused student who has been performing extremely well the past two terms since he received his new tablet. He seldom miss classes and completed his assignments when classes were still online. The school recently opened for full in person classes since April 2021 and the devices are still used for online activities that are posted in the google classroom. In addition, students use the tablets for research purposes in class, to complete live worksheets, watch educational videos and to work on mathematical concepts. Omarion has shown great improvement in his academic performance and he is quite proactive in researching to enhance his understanding of the various lessons.

Trisalee is a Grade 6 student who had great difficulty accessing classes and completing her assignments. However, after receiving a tablet there has being major improvement in her attendance and completion of assignments. Additionally, she used the tablet to do more research and worksheets to remedy the learning loss she experienced due to her minimal engagement in classes prior to receiving the device. Since then, she has been using the tablet efficiently and is on her way to success. This tablet has really been instrumental in her preparation for her Primary Exit Profile Exam which will determine the secondary school that she will attend in the Fall of 2022.

Omarion, Trisalee and the other beneficiaries are on their way to greatness because of your donation to VHF!
