Health expenditure in Madagascar continues to be amongst the lowest globally, representing just 1% of national spending in 2020. Basic Community Health Centres, referred to in Madagascar as Centre de Santé de Bases (CSBs) in rural areas bear the brunt of the burden as spending is focused on urban areas, leaving remote communities deprioritised and beyond reach.
Approximately half of all health facilities lack access to an improved water source and hygienic latrines. Unsanitary Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) conditions in CSBs perpetuate the transmission of WASH-related disease, which can be especially detrimental in medical environments where healthcare workers are in close contact with sick and injured patients.
It was in response to this health crisis that SEED launched the WASH and electrification programmes to improve the health status of 16,000+ people, specifically women and children as the primary care seekers and providing solar electrification, essential especially for night time emergencies.
This project was started at Ambinanibe CSB. So far two Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines, three composting latrines, and a new Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM)/shower facility have been completed. In February 2025, the installation of a 10000l rain water harvesting system and solar power systems will be completed. In addition to this, WASH education has been delivered to the CSB staff and patients to ensure proper maintenance of these facilities and to promote health.
The next CSB, that will benefit from this project is Ankilivalo. Final planning and purchasing for this CSB is ongoing, and the construction team is expected to arrive on site by mid-February 2025.
