Hello, dear community! We hope this email finds you well.
World Water Day (22nd March) is approaching, and we would like to share the story of the Kukama Kukamiria women, who are organised in the Huaynakana Kamatahuara Kana federation in Loreto, Peru.
They set a powerful precedent for communities leading initiatives to conserve their water sources. Get to know them! The story of the Kukama women, organised in the Huaynakana Kamatahuara Kana federation in Loreto, Peru.

With a watershed the size of Ecuador, the Marañón River is home to 1025 species of vertebrates, such as manatees, red and grey dolphins, and jaguars, as well as 448 bird species. It feeds nets with fish, riverbeds with silt, and people drink, bathe, and travel in its currents.
In March 2024, the communities living near the river that gives rise to the Amazon received great news: the Marañón was recognised as an entity with the right to exist, run its course, be restored, carry out its essential functions within the ecosystem, and to remain free from pollution.
Furthermore, it was also recognised as having the right to have a voice, so the daughters, mothers, and grandmothers of the Kukama Kukamiria people were acknowledged by the judiciary as its "defenders and representatives."
We continue to celebrate this great news, which marked its first anniversary just a few days ago.
