We started the computer lab in Boracay, Philippines for numerous reasons. One that the island had closed and we thought it would be a good opportunity to reach out to the community while they adjusted to the temporary closure.
We have many children in the homes which are half Japanese and half Filipino.
We saw this an opportunity for the children in our homes to not only reach out to the Philippines but create an online environment for them to share ideas, English and Japanese together.
We took laptops donated by Morgan Stanley and then installed WIFI as well as www.nightzookeeper.com software for the kids to use.
There are over 166 kids with accounts at the school in Boracay and we are now looking to expland to the nearby school as well as set up a lab for kids who have never touched a keyboard get familiar with computers.
The kids at the school have written 22,330 words since we launched in July. Despite brown outs and long periods where we could not go online, the island has opened again and so the kids are able to come to the class twice a week.
They are writing about all the different lessons we have posted.
There are such themes as Cyber-bullying, science and poetry.
In the new year, we envision not only teaching Japanese online for those who are interested but connecting more schools and children.
We are now in need or more laptops and more WIFI connections.
We will also start CODE CLUB in the Philippines and connect the kids within YouMeWe.
In the ever changing world of IOT, AI and technolgy, we feel that communication, collaboration and looking at the earth more holistically is something that would never change.
We dedicated the lab to our colleague who passed away unexpectedly in 2018 who worked for us as a IT technician.
