Previous to YALP Second Generation

We spent a week reviewing each of the applications received and the proposed projects. The projects were received in videos of no more than 3 minutes and we had approximately 100 applications. Previous to the selection process, we conducted interviews with the people who had passed the first filter.

During the first weeks of August we made the selection of the second generation of YALP 2022. Part of the team and volunteers made a thorough selection in which we strived to create a diverse group where their projects could generate high impact in their communities. The 10 people selected were notified and from that moment began the management of the activities to receive them on the dates of September 19 to 31, 2022. Among the activities prior to receiving the people, we were in charge of booking hotel rooms, purchasing airline and bus tickets, as well as the purchase of welcome kits and supplies for the classes.

At the same time we began to quote for meals and box lunch, because the activities were scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 at night. Reservations were made for the use of rooms and spaces for classes, workshops and lectures, and also contemplated the purchase of COVID-19 tests and first-aid kits.

YALP weeks

From September 19th to 31th, we received the participants, where we shared the calendar of activities and schedules that they would have during the two weeks of their residency.

The first week we had the opportunity to take classes at the installations of HSBC, El Colegio de Mexico, the Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination of Mexico City and Netflix. The second we visited the Chamber of Senators, the Canada Embassy and Nike.

During the stay, the students were able to meet different people specialized in anti-racism. Most of the classes were face-to-face and some were online due to the remoteness of the teachers. The classes covered topics such as technology and racism, feminism and decoloniality, media and racism, white privilege, indigenous world, transfeminisms, racism and migration, among others. At the end of each session, time was set aside to talk about their projects and the process of creating a methodology for implementation and how they would be carried out once the residency was completed.

Each of the participating teachers was supported with transportation in case they lived in Mexico City and needed it, as well as an honorarium for the class they taught.

The second generation of YALP was a success. The participants had the opportunity to create bonds of friendship and learning during their stay. At the end they had the opportunity to present their projects according to what they had learned and what their future projects were.

Mentoring and project financing

At the end of the project, we held a general meeting with the team to make a diagnosis of what had been done and to provide feedback on the work.

The projects of the YALP generation will be mentored by different people specialized in the topics, the methodology of the mentoring consists of theoretical and practical support to land the projects in a period of 6 months. In each month it is proposed that the sessions will be from 1 to 2 hours, according to the time of each one. This mentoring is paid on a fee basis, for 6 months of support for the 10 teachers. The mentoring would begin in December and end in May 2023.

There will also be a consultation on which of the projects will be financed with the GlobalGiving fund and the other projects will seek financial support that will be adapted to the specific projects.
