The Joy of Partnerships: TIP and PLAY

By Alex Lord | Project Manager

Like all organisations around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a big impact on PLAY’s ability to carry out its work in the field. Government measures including restrictions on movement, a ban on all public gatherings and strict social distancing have meant that the PLAY team has been working from home, doing our best to keep the parts of our work going that we can. We have been inspiring our beneficiaries with our daily “work-from-home challenges”, some of which you can find on our Facebook page. In these very difficult times, the feeling that “we are in this together” and encouraging each other to stay physically and mentally fit is more important than ever!

For our last two reports, we have shared how the project has benefitted the lives of two young volunteers. We decided therefore, for this report, to take a slightly different focus and highlight one of the wonderful partnerships PLAY has developed over the past decade. With the knowledge that we can’t make big and lasting changes if we all work alone, having strong and fruitful partnerships is key to PLAY’s success. The Ideas Partnership, or TIP, was co-founded by a British lady called Elizabeth Gowing and works with some of Kosovo’s most vulnerable groups from the Roma, Ashkali, and Egyptian communities. Since 2013, PLAY has been in partnership with TIP to bring each organization’s unique benefits to these groups. TIP’s Learning Centers, based in some of the villages and towns where PLAY implements this project, are a fantastic counterpart to the activities that PLAY runs and one that we are proud to cooperate with.

As part of PLAY’s 20th Anniversary Celebrations in October 2019, we asked Elizabeth what her thoughts were about our partnership: “I think we have really benefited both from having a partner organization that is sorted, which knows what it is doing, and has a clear vision and way of working in order to reach that vision. It can actually get in the way if you are trying to partner with an organization that doesn’t have that!

PLAY and TIP programs currently overlap in two critical locations, Janjevë / Janjevo and Fushë Kosova / Kosovo Polje where there are significant minority populations. In Janjevë / Janjevo – an extremely diverse village south of the capital Pristina, TIP and PLAY have been working together for seven years, offering a variety of programs to multiple communities. “In Janjevë/Janjevo, through PLAY’s initiatives, TIP has been able to offer a much richer mix of opportunities to the beneficiaries we have there.” However, it’s not just the beneficiaries that Elizabeth feels have been impacted by such a successful partnership. “It has also given opportunities for our volunteers and staff to learn things, so I feel like we have really grown as an organisation thanks to PLAY”.

The partnership with PLAY and TIP will continue to grow and flourish in the years ahead, especially with the support of you - our GlobalGiving community of friends (you can also find TIP on GlobalGiving!). Both organizations will continue to work for the empowerment of Kosovo minorities through education, dialogue, and opportunities to come together through sport and play. Through this partnership, we hope to achieve what Elizabeth described as social justice and awareness of human rights for all: “Rather than saying we want Serbs and Albanians to love each other, to be able to say, we have been able to raise the awareness about human rights and social justice for everyone in Kosovo, then of course Serbs and Albanians, and Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians are going to get a different vision of their own identity, of their shared ownership of Kosovo, of their shared belonging in a country together.”

We would like to finish this report by making a special mention and thank you to GlobalGiving, which generously selected PLAY for a $1,000 Emergency Grant to help us weather the challenges that the global pandemic has brought. We are waiting with lots of enthusiasm to get back out there and do what we do best: PLAY!
