Dear Friends
Thanks to your help we have met the fundraising goal for our Deer Run Nature Preserve Youth Empowerment Project. Over the next month, two teams of young people will work with naturalists on the Preserve to remove invasive species from a threatened wetland. The wetland, home to beavers, turtles, ducks, various birds and many insect and amphibian species, is dependent for its sustenance on the native species that are being crowded out by invasives. In addition, the participants will be replanting the area with native species like willow and alder that have been crowded out by the invasives.
This project provides at-risk youth, after a difficult year due to the pandemic, with an outdoor opportunity for meaningful work where they will learn critical employment skills while making a major contribution to the environment and the community. They will also benefit from working hand-in-hand with skilled naturalists, increasing their environmental awareness and introducing them to career options.
Thank you again for your support in helping this project become a reality.
