Late last year, we received wonderful news from one of our YWOW-sponsored beneficiaries Katja!
The Epworth Foundation, funded by loyal alum and GlobalGiving donors, enabled a unique opportunity to come Katja’s way back in Dec 2018.
MAHLE Behr (engineering sector) - a leading international supplier to the automotive industry - spotted Katja’s potential and offered her the chance to study engineering in Germany and become part of the ever-increasing increasing number of global women engineers.
Hear some of her story:
‘I am loving Mechanical Engineering! With every new module, I become more convinced that this is the perfect course for me. I have particularly enjoyed designing mechanical systems and solving thermodynamic or fluid mechanic problems. This course offers challenges which I love wrestling with and ultimately I can overcome thanks to the skills, discipline, attitudes and faith that I developed during my time at Epworth School. I am very happy in my beautiful 2nd home Karlsruhe, Germany.I live with a South African friend I met here and who studies with me. She is also my travel buddy, and together we have been to, and are still planning to see, many incredible places in Europe. Next on our list is a 9-day hike in Portugal called the Fisherman’s trail.I wish I could study here forever, but at the same time, I am excited to return to South Africa once I have graduated to be part of Mahle in a real everyday way. I look forward greatly to using my degree and experience to give back.’
Epworth School and the Epworth Foundation are committed supporters of STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) thus allowing women to compete with and complement innovation in this previously male-dominated industry.
Just before end-of-year exams, electrical engineer Andrew visited Epworth to share ideas on electrical safety and loadshedding with the natural sciences classes. This greatly enhanced the reality of the academic syllabus on electricity and would undoubtedly have played a part in the outstanding results achieved by the class of 2022.
Katja and more of our YWOW's (Young women of Worth program beneficiaries) would wholeheartedly agree with Marie Curie who once said:
'I am among those who think that science has great beauty".
