‘Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire’
This is what Epworth School has done for the past 125 years – lighting fires in the lives of young pupils in Africa to contribute to our ever-changing world.
This past term has seen our Young Women of Worth bursary beneficiaries, together with their peers, involved in numerous educationally-inspiring activities.
Social Sciences/Geography - Earth Active at our acclaimed eco-school
In March, 4 of our YWOW Earth Active students joined in to greet school traffic with a show of support for the “Fridays for Future” campaign, an international student movement that promotes immediate climate change action through campaigning and advocacy.
These YWOW students were also proud team recipients of the prestigious Eco-Schools’ Platinum 4 Decade award. This award recognises commitment to creating a sustainable environment. Epworth is one of the two oldest Eco-Schools in South Africa and has received an award in this sphere for the past 19 years. The programme is active in 68 countries and 59 000 schools around the world having been originally implemented in South Africa by WESSA (Wild Life and Environmental Society of South Africa)
Mathematics - Pi Day
Pi Day, which celebrates the mathematical constant of pi (∏), was the perfect opportunity to bring this ‘pun-fun’ concept to real life. 12 of our YWOW beneficiaries participated in playing maths-inspired games, eating ‘pies’ and enjoying ‘pie’ themed dress up outfits with circles on them or as characters starting with the letters “pi”, Pi Day is celebrated annually at Epworth on 14 March due to its numerical date of 3/14 being the same as pi ie 3,14...(representing the circumference of a circle).
History - Lessons from the Holocaust
As part of their history curriculum, 3 YWOW pupils travelled with their class to visit the Durban Holocaust and Genocide Centre (DHGC). In addition to the deeply-moving exhibits and talks, the DHGC impacted our pupils with an unforgettable awareness of the evils of genocide, particularly focusing on the Holocaust and the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
