Amongst various term 2 / 2023 educational activities for our Young Women of Worth beneficiaries -
67 minutes for Mandela Day was a firm favourite!
On 18 July, in celebration of Mandela Day, Epworth High School dedicated 67 minutes – in commemoration of Mandela’s near life-long prison service – to giving back to our community. The pupils provided spreads and gathered together to make sandwiches for Life Changer, a local organisation that cares for the homeless. These young women of worth draw strongly from Mandela's famous words: 'What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others'.
There was also a Grade 10 IsiZulu evening held:
Attended by all independent high schools in KwaZulu-Natal, the Grade 10 IsiZulu evening was designed to celebrate and expose pupils to Zulu culture. It comprised different performances including, gumboot dancing, plays, Zulu dancing, singing and poetry reciting all in IsiZulu. It ended with a Zulu cuisine dinner.
At the event, five Epworth pupils were recognised for being in the top 10 of the KZN independent schools’ IsiZulu essay competition and two pupils came first and second in the spelling bee.
Our YWOW girls at the top in SA's national Geography Olympiad
Epworth and its YWOW pupils excelled in the 2023 South African National Geography Olympiad (SANGO), achieving top results across the board. Epworth was the top independent school in the country, top school by province and an Epworth Grade 12 pupil, was top female in the country. This YWOW was invited to represent South Africa at the international Geography Olympiad in Indonesia later in the year.
