Special Needs Rhinos, Rising Feed Costs and Security measures for our wild Rhinos

By Annie Peatling | Funding & Reporting

Dear GlobalGiving Family,

We are grateful for your ongoing support of the Zululand Rhino Orphanage (ZRO). Thanks to your generosity, we successfully completed essential boma upgrades in 2024, allowing us to accommodate the increasing number of rhino orphans affected by the poaching crisis. However, as we enter 2025, our needs remain critical.

Supporting Blind Lazula
One of our most urgent priorities is ensuring the long-term care of Lazula, a blind rhino calf who requires a specialized environment for her safety and well-being. While we have already built an ICU boma for her initial care, she will soon need to transition into a larger, purpose-built enclosure that can accommodate her growing size and ongoing needs. Expanding this boma is essential to providing her with a secure and enriched habitat where she can continue her rehabilitation.

Rising Food Costs & Increased Demand
The cost of caring for orphaned rhinos is increasing dramatically. In 2025, our food expenses alone are projected to exceed R2 million, as we continue to rescue and rehabilitate new orphans. Running a rhino orphanage is an immense financial responsibility, and we must secure additional funding to ensure that all rhinos receive the nutrition and care they require.

Protecting Our Rhino Population
Beyond the orphanage, we are intensifying efforts to protect wild rhinos from further poaching threats. Our Endangered Species Protection Project is implementing advanced drone surveillance technology to monitor and safeguard rhinos within the reserve. If you would like to contribute to this initiative, your donation will directly support these cutting-edge security measures, helping us prevent more rhino calves from being orphaned in the first place.

Your support has already made an incredible impact, but we need your help more than ever to sustain these efforts. Whether by contributing to Lazula’s new boma, covering food expenses, or funding anti-poaching technology, every donation makes a difference in the fight to protect and rehabilitate these incredible animals.

Thank you for standing with us in this vital mission.
