Research and conservation of wild yams

By Madhu Ramnath | Project Leader

Skilled village experts collaborate on an important research and conservation initiative in Palani Hills.

Our partner Palni Hills Conservation Council (PHCC)  has initiated a nursery in the PHCC Arboretum.  This nursery serves as a sanctuary for at least 10 distinct species of wild yams (Dioscorea) that come from various regions of India. These important species and their genetic diversity are safeguarded at the center. The nursery is managed by a team of skilled village experts dedicated to the preservation of these species. These experts document the development of the plants, beginning with the first sprouts emerging from the soil, to ensure a thorough understanding of their growth cycles and conservation needs. Read the full report.
