Advocate for cancer patients not getting treatment

Social Work Orientation

We've helped so far 9 men and 88 women living in Tijuana, Tecate, Mexicali, San Quintín and Rosarito in Baja California and from Sonora, who came to Tijuana or Mexicali to receive their treatment.

We have provided 161 services, including:

Oncology consultation
Specialist consultation to identify the patient's rank in the International Emergency Code for medical care
Nutritional advice
Advocacy and training on patients' rights and the Official Mexican Standard for Breast and Prostate Cancer
Social Work counseling
Hospital navigation
Breast prosthesis
Turbans
Personal Protection Equipment (face shield, mask and antibacterial gel)
Reporting the cases of patients who stopped receiving or did not get their meds and successfully achieve that 90% of patients received their treatment almost immediately
And lots of love and accompaniment to patient appointments

We still have work to do, cancer patients still need our help, whether it is to empower themselves regarding their health rights, to obtain advice on procedures, to feel calm and safe when receiving their treatment or going to consultation or to receive their medications.

Cancer patients have rights stipulated by law, among them, to receive full treatment; when treatment is suspended or denied there are several instances to which they can resort to assert their right, which range from a general complaint, a complaint to the Conamed (National Commission of Medical Arbitration), complaint for violation of human rights, individual or collective injunction and even complaints in international instances.

In this process, patients are not alone, at ProOncavi we support them with advice, hospital navigation and accompaniment during the process. In addition to supporting them with complementary services when they are required, such is the case of Eva, who was denied treatment because the equipment at the hospital was broken, which is why she was supported so she could begin receiving her treatment, which was suspended again in december and we are currently taking actions to get it resumed, she was also referred to a Councilor of the City Council to receive financial support and she was channeled to an Art Therapy Workshop that we were carrying out.

Another patient, in this case already successfully concluded, is Olivia's, whose medication was suspended, which was refilled, she was also referred to an oncology consultation to establish her priority level of care according to the international code of emergency.

We also printed (see attachment) an infographic to explain the process to file an injunction for lack of medicines.

Unfortunately, many of the provided services were carried out by telephone and by direct courier, for which reason only the registration and follow-up files are available but not photographs. This situation will be corrected for the next report as it has already been requested that instead of a phone call, a video call be made to take evidence, as well as the consultations. The PPE is just being delivered.
