Hurricane Fiona was a catalyst for new collaborations for PRoTechos in a new location, the town of Yauco. Right after the hurricane hit Puerto Rico, we received calls from various governmental agencies and nonprofits all with the same interest - working with us to bring stability to the most vulnerable. Even though work in Yauco meant additional commuting time for our carpenters and trainees, they did not hesitate, as the PRoTechos team is committed to building and training wherever the need is greatest.
Our municipal contact directed us to an urgent case: a 93 year old man who lost half of his roof in the hurricane. In a few weeks, our carpenters, assisted by three trainees, finished the reconstruction of his roof, and we were able to restore a sense of normalcy and stability. We could not have done this without the support of NGOs Mochileros and Arte para Unir, which provided the materials. This new collaboration resulted in a new pool of trainees in a new location, expanding our training program in southern Puerto Rico.
The trainees have had the opportunity to learn in ways that had never been possible before in PRoTechos history. The 3 trainees, under the guidance of our professional carpenters and roofing instructor, were presented with the opportunity to completely rebuild homes, as the 3 projects they have participated in have been full rebuilds due to the devastating conditions in which we found them.
We are currently working on a home where a young mother resides with her 6-month old baby. For this case, our team has been supported by the municipality through the provision of materials as well as daily transportation to get to one of the most remote areas we have worked in. The single mother and her baby are receiving a brand new resilient roof that simply would have not been possible without these collaborations.
Our trainees are a crucial part of the process, giving their time, resources, and energy to travel to this remote site to learn how to rebuild roofs and support their community. Our training program and the ripple effect that it causes across Puerto Rico is crucial to our mission. In order to continue fulfilling our mission of strengthening Puerto Rico, One Roof at a Time, we will need your support. With your donation you can join an incredible coalition of community members, municipalities, compassionate individuals and our team. We appreciate each and every one of you and hope that you will consider making an additional donation to support our work.
During the Little by Little Campaign from April 3 through 7, your donation to PRoTechos of up to $50 will be matched at 50% by GlobalGiving. Please consider making a donation of $50 today that will result in a $75 donation to PRoTechos. Thank you!
