We've reached 40% of the funding goal for our maternal health project in Dulag, Philippines. The clinic building itself is finished and staff already serving patients there. We still need to complete the small residential huts where families from remote areas can stay temporararily until the mother gives birth, so the midwives don't need to travel and the mother can be observed during her intiial post-partum period.
The Bahai Arugaan ni Maria (BAM) Birthing Center in San Jose serves a medically under-resourced area, with a high rate of teen pregnancies. Teenage mothers often have health complications as their bodies have not yet finished maturing and pregnancy takes away many nutrients from the mother's body for the developing fetus. This is one reason the midwives make sure that all pregant women are receiving and taking good quality pre-natal vitamins that the clinic distributes for free.
The midwives had one patient who came to the clinic, complaining of heavy bleeding. The mother had been doing laundry when she started bleeding. She was stabilized by our midwives but had to be transported for a C-section. The baby had to be resucitated after birth and spent a month in the neo-natal intensive unit, but unfortunately, did not survive due to birth complications. Our midwives teach pregnant mothers they should not do any strenous activities or heavy lifting (especially late in the pregnancy) as this can make the uterus contract and the placenta detach, which can affect the oxygen supply to the baby and cause birth complications. Unfortunately, many women must still work or do heavy housework and this story can be the outcome.
The Dulag clinic had 165 normal deliveries between January and December 2024. All babies were exclusively breastfed. This is vital as the area is still recovering from typhoon damage and water sources can still be contaminated.
Thanks for your continued support of this project
Love and Blessings,
