Our Cash for Trash program is 62% funded. We've raised $4022 (out of $6460 needed) and have only $2438 to go until it's fully funded.
The Cash for Trash program is becoming an important part of village life in Nyuh Kuning. We hear stories that people are saving their plastic waste from both their own households and from their workplaces to bring in for cash. One woman in our village who works as a maid asked her employer if she can have all her plastic waste, so she now gets double the amount she previously got. More importantly, she has doubled the amount of plastic she saves from going into the garbage and into landfill or being burned. A small win, but small steps can make a long journey!
The Cash for Trash program has become so popular in our village that the team leaders decided to add a composting feature. When organic matter goes into landfills, it rots and produces greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane. Now, Nyuh Kuning households are being asked to save and bring in all their organic waste which is then turned into rich, healthy compost for household gardens. Every family has a space in their compound where they grow fruit trees, usually papaya, mango, coconut, rambutan, jackfruit and sometimes durian. These fruits add important vitamins to family diets or can be sold in the local markets for extra income. Win, win!
Don't forget that 3 - 7 April (next week!) is GlobalGiving's Little x Little campaign. All donations up to $50 will be matched by GlobalGiving and matching funds won't run out. This is a great time to donate to our Cash for Trash and Waste Education program and help us get it fully funded!
