Ending off the year on a HIGH NOTE!

By Mbali Nkosi and Bridget Johnsen | Project Contributor and Project Leader

Mass Item at Epworth Siyacula Concert
Mass Item at Epworth Siyacula Concert

What a journey it has been for all principals, teachers and learners involved in the Legacy Projects this year. We thank you... the donors ....for making it all possible.

Our year closed off with a festival of music called the Siyacula “We Sing” Festival. After months of dedication and many hours of rehearsals, our schools all came together to share a day of music and joy. For many of our learners it was quite the experience getting on a bus and going on a little excursion, as some children had never left their villages. One little boy jumped off the bus, bright eyed and thrilled, and then simply marvelled at the beautiful, sparkling Olympic sized swimming pool at our hosting school, Epworth. He’d never seen a swimming pool so close-up before!

Each school had a chance to perform their songs in a concert, focused on the themes of Climate Change, Regenerative Agriculture, Conservation, Water and Environmental Sustainability.  At the end of each Siyacula Concert,  all learners from well-resourced and poorly resourced schools alike, shared the stage together, to present the mass choir items.

Through this project, learners from the rural areas have had their horizons expanded. One precious soul came running up to my car as I pulled up for choir practice one day. He helped carry my bags and couldn’t wait to hurry me into our rehearsal venue. He shared that originally he wanted to be a policeman, but since singing in the choir he now wants to be a conductor. He showed off how he’d been practicing his conducting skills, which offered an opportunity to capture the moment on camera ....please see the accompanying photographs.

Music is an alternate universe where learners are often unrecognisable from who they are outside of it. The agitated become clam. The shy become confident. The lonely become included. The quiet become heard. And the lost become found. Music reveals the real child.

Our teachers too had the real privelege of meeting with an ABRSM examiner, to understand better the requirements of entering the Initial  ABRSM Choral Examination in 2023. It was held at Girls High School, Pietermaritzburg, with a superb demonstration of a choral examination by the GHS Choir. Thanks again to all involved.  We look forward to entries from several schools in 2023 and 2024.

The Michaelhouse Community Partnership again kindly hosted our final Principal leadership development workshop for Berg Principals, while Epworth hosted all the workshops for the Greytown and Pietermaritzburg Schools. Heartfelt thanks to these well-resourced schools, putting the sharing of resources into action!

Many thanks once again to all relevant stakeholders, donors and supporters of this project. Music isn’t extra. It isn’t discretionary. It’s not disposable.  Music is core. And it is a fundamental and irreplaceable component of a holistic and meaningful education. That’s what music is!

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to each of you, with  all the blessings that MUSIC and CHOIRS bring to the holiday season....we have made a special very short film about the research we have been doing with the Instititute of Natural Resources  in the Isiphethu Sothukela Legacy project this year, under the Bristol University-led UKRI programme, "Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures" . Look out for it in the build up to Giving Tuesday! It comes with a special thank you again for your part in our successes this year,

With our heartfelt appreciation,

Mbali, Bridget and the PSI Projects Team
