The young women in our Chelly Scholarship program continue to thrive. I just wish to take a moment here to report on two of our remarkable scholars, whose first names are Rina and Jakkrya. These women were both accepted into the prestigous Harpswell Foundation, a finishing school that provides leadership opportunities to some of the brightest young women in Cambodia while they attend one of the universities in Phnom Penh. Only twenty or so young women from all of Cambodia are selected each year, making it all the more remarkable that two of our 27 Chelly Scholars have been among those young people selected in successive years.
Over the past three months, Rina (pictured at top) has been involved in Harpswell's Cabodian Women's Leadership program, and has been working on one of the program's Civil Engagement projects. The project involves a collaboration of four students from Harpswell working together to provide seminars for high school students, sharing information about college scholarship opportunities.
Jakkrya has distinguished herself while at Harpswell in participating in various human rights forums, including her becoming involved in sponsored collegiate debates on human rights issues. She is currently interning with the Cambodian Development Resource Institute, with her role including fieldwork and data collection on a variety of research projects. Her dream is pursuing a master's degree abroad in international relations.
These two remarkable people are from the village that we have been focusing our work in for the past eight years. We could not begin to have offered the cholarships to Rina, Jakkrya, and 25 other young people that have been made available to date without all of your generous support. On behalf of all of our scholars, I cannot thank you enough.
My annual donor letter will be out in December, where I will give updates on The Chelly School, the new school we built for hundreds of primary school students, will talk more about our scholarship program, and will provide news about an exciting new project The Chelly Foundation is sponsoring.
Thanks again.
