Since our previous report, the project leaders, volunteers and beneficiaries took a break during the school holidays, which started in the second week of December and finished in the third week of January. There was a bit of informal riding happening with two of our volunteers willing to take the kids who were available during the holiday period. There was some near crashed during these rides as flooding caused severe erosion to some of the local roads and trails.
The project officially reopened the same day as the schools commenced, and we had a lot of small boys who were very eager to join the project, with many new faces. We always take it very slow for the first few rides, since the new riders often end up crashing while trying to learn how to ride within their capabilities. They want to show the older riders that they can also ride well, but often overestimating their skill level.
We also have a new group of riders who are very young and they will only train on the sports court with the small single speed bicycles, in order to learn the basic skills of riding, while also learning some basic life skills in the process.
Our first event took place early in February at the Coetsenburg Trails, where a few World Cup events and many National events have been hosted. The course is very technical with some world class obstacles to navigate, for those who are daring and skilled enough to ride the "A Lines". The children also had opportunity here to ride in our brand new team kit for the first time.
The summer is very hot, but also very windy at the moment. The positive side is that the season is still long and the kids can look forward to many of the events we'll still be attending, which they absolutely love.
Bicycle maintenance is a continual need, especially with all the new riders having to learn all the skills. Thank you to all our faithful supporters who help us to pay the bills.
