Although the project activities don't officially run during the long December/January South-African summer holiday, we have some very committed volunteers who made sure the chidlren who didn't go away for their holiday, got to spend lots of fun time riding their bicycles and even regularly going for a swim in the nearby river on hot days.
Since the project activities started mid-January, attendance has been very consistent by our boys, even amidst the windy and very hot weather conditions. We've also had a couple of new boys joining the programme, to the point of being on full capacity.
The kids have competed in two events already, one on the 29th of February and the other on the 8th of March, which was the worlds biggest annual cycling event, the Cape Town Cycle Tour. This year around 30 000 people partook in the Tour. Two of the children did the tour of 109km for the first time and they were very proud of themselves to have completed it succesfully. The first event was a mountain biking event, with distances 15km, 30km and 60km. All participating children completed their respective distances succesfully. For some this was their first cycling race ever.
Beside the two events we attended for racing, the kids, together with some volunteers, also served as water point attendants, at a local off-road triathlon. This forms part of their leadership development and helps them to understand the importance of giving, not just receiving. The same exersize was done at a local Mountain Biking event at the end of last year. They all enjoyed these experiences very much.
In terms of skills development, we've been focussing a lot on leadership development and for the boys specifically, what it means to grow into manhood. The girls are still picking up in terms of their attendance. Some of them will also be joining a few selected boys on a leadership development camp, aimed at developing resiliance within them and teaching them to act as ambassadors for child safety.
We are very excited about the new Project Manager, who was appointed in February. She's already doing amaising things for the development of the project, on the academic and the cycling whole-life-coaching side. Please meet Shannon Herbst, pictured below.
