Training for (young) women has started.

Shortly before the Corona outbreak in early 2020, everything was prepared in our Kesha Child Welfare Center in Robertsganj, Sonbhadra for the start of the Keshwa Gurukul School and two qualification programs. We had received the licenses for these projects from the Indian government. Government funds should be granted for the programs.

The pandemic stopped everything; the programs were not allowed to start. In spring 2022 we received approval to start the school project. We kicked-off with five school children and have grown a lot since then. More than 80 children are currently attending Keshwa Gurukul School. Unfortunately, there are no government funds at the moment. Further details on the school project will follow in the next report.

Despite the challenges, we decided in February 2023 that we also want to start Skill training for (young) women in tailoring and fashion from April on. We have a first-class infrastructure with very good sewing machines and a training room for theory classes. We are very proud and happy to offer this opportunity to needy people in Sonbhadra.

In March, Ms.Indu Singh was hired as a trainer and Ms. Geeta Kumari as an assistant. Currently 25 women are registered, 15 of whom are girls who have completed school and 10 women are married. Each training period lasts three months with four-hour lessons per day. After that, new women come to the training.

In early 2023, we started mobilization meetings with girls and women from the surrounding villages for admission to these free of charge training sessions. At the end of the training there is a practical as well as a theoretical exam. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate from the Indian government.

Most women want to work from home and start a small business after they finish their trainings. We advise them so that they can make the most of this training to earn money. This also helps the children in the families, giving them the opportunity to go to school. There is often a lack of money in families, and children have to work instead of studying.

Since there is currently no governmental funding for the Skill program, we have to finance it completely ourselves. A problem that needs to be solved in the future is that some women want to come to training in the evening and not during the day, but our center closes at 7pm. But we will also find a solution for this over time.

Great progress in core programs

School operations at our Keshwa Child Welfare Center in Robertsganj, Sonbhadra continue to run well. More than 50 children come to the school, and we want to increase the number of pupils in 2023 when the school year changes.

The special feature of our school for poor children is the wide range of subjects, that is only offered at expensive private schools. In addition to Hindi, mathematics and science, we offer sports, music, painting, computer technology and English. Science and mathematics are taught in two languages (Hindi and English).

In the last four months several exams in all subjects were carried out with great success. The children enjoy coming to school and there are regular teacher/parent talks. We purchased a new school bus and conduct excursions with a picnic. This is a whole new experience for the school children.

After the start of the children’s emergency aid program in August 2022, more than 100 children were “picked up and rescued” since then, i.e. in cooperation with the authorities they were either handed over to any of their relatives with intensive counseling sessions were held or taken to other social institutions.

From 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., 5 social workers each work in two shifts at the train station and in a 1-mile-area on the lookout for children who have run away from home, are begging, might be involved in drug deals and much more.

One example is about a 16-year-old boy and an unhappy love affair with a girl who was unaware of his affection. The boy then “threw up” at school, ran away from home and came to Varanasi. A relative of the girl then found the boy at our booth at Banaras train station in Varanasi and physically attacked the youth and our staff. The situation was resolved with the help of the authorities. The boy is now back at home with his parents and is learning a trade and is doing well.

This is an example of cases emerging daily.

Keshwa Gurukul School on the road to success

It is now nine months since we were allowed to start school operations in December 2021 in our Keshwa Child Welfare Center in Robertsganj, Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh .

The Indian government gave its approval in November 2021 and so we were able to inaugurate the Keshwa Gurukul School with five children. The problem was that we were in the middle of the school year and therefore children couldn’t just be pulled from other schools.

Thanks to a lot of persuasion by the center management and the teaching team, it has now been possible to have a permanent student base of more than 50 children. This is much more difficult than one can imagine, since schooling is compulsory in India, but it is up to the parents to decide whether their children go to school or not.

It is all the more gratifying that almost all students regularly come to our classes. A great success, which is only maintained through regular discussions with the guardians.

The following subjects are taught: English, mathematics, Hindi, science and from the 3rd grade also Computer lessons. There are also arts, sports and yoga.

We are very proud and happy that the school is developing so successfully. We aim to have 100-150 children at the school in the next year. Currently we have children in preschool and grades 1-4.

From now on, we want to tell a short personal and real story from students. Let us begin today with Jyotish (11 years). He used to not like going to school at all. He said at home that he was at school, but then went fishing or playing with his friends. However, one day our teacher S. Devi saw him. There were then regular talks with the parents over a period of three months. With a lot of love, care and respect, his attitude changed. Today he is one of our most keen and best students.
Jyotish now comes to classes regularly and is very enthusiastic.
