Open Shelter Home: Education for 25 boys

Lessons in class 1

The „Keshwa Open Shelter Home“ program in Robertsganj includes the daily care and education of 25 boys aged 6-10 years from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Saturday, except on public holidays. We pick up the children from home and bring them into our Keshwa Child Welfare Center in the morning and start the day with a morning prayer.

This is followed by a three-hour lesson in Hindi, English, mathematics, and general knowledge. The children receive daily instruction in these subjects. At 1 p.m. there will be lunch together. After the meal, the children have time until 4 p.m. for games, singing, dancing and other leisure activities. This promotes social interaction, as some children are shy and reserved.

After the play phase, the children are brought back home by 5 p.m. Over time we will bring many of the children from this program together with the school children from Keshwa Gurukul School so that separate classes will emerge. The children can then also use our newly purchased playground opposite the Keshwa Child Welfare Center.

All children are from families who live below the poverty line. They come from three villages in a distance of around 3-4 kilometers from our Keshwa Child Welfare Center. Normally parents are not always motivated to send their children to school as they need them to earn some money. Sometimes it is a challenge to win the parents into sending their children to school as often as possible.

We only can reach them as we are in permanent contact with the families and over time, we build a trustful relationship and try to strengthen the self-confidence of the women. So, education of the children and family consulting goes hand in hand. But it will take time and we are not successful in all cases as some people are still not convinced. But we are making good progress and get support from local Government.

In order to bring more children from the villages we need a school bus. This will be our next investment as soon as the budget is available.

Omicron variant is impacting our projects in KCWC

It was too good to be true. We had hoped so much that in the new year we could gradually start and continue with our programs.

Unfortunately, the pandemic “turned our plans upside down” again. The number of cases with the omicron variant is increasing and as a result the government has again imposed restrictions. What does this mean for us?

There are currently no face-to-face classes at our Keshwa Gurukul School. We try to provide the children at home with teaching materials as best we can. The teachers are in contact with the students and the subject matter is passed on as well as possible and as intensively as the parents or siblings support the children. It is unclear how long distance learning will continue. In any case, we prepare the upcoming examination tasks. We are very happy that we can continue the lessons at all.

Unfortunately, in our skill programs we also have to interrupt the lessons for the gardener training program. The planned second program can only start later. The same applies to the training program for fashion tailoring. We started there too recently and have to stop again.

It is of course an unsatisfactory situation for everyone involved. We want to help people, especially children and juveniles, and yet we have to comply with the conditions and government regulations. But we are not giving up and are always preparing for the fact that school, training and child emergency aid can be offered in full in the coming months, accompanied by the outreach program, women empowerment and the program for the disabled.

One day the pandemic will end and then we will give all our energy to the needy people who currently cannot benefit from it because we are not allowed to provide all services at the moment due to the pandemic.

New start of our school Keshwa Gurukul

Restart Inclusive School Keshwa Gurukul

In the middle of September, the time had come that we started a new attempt with our inclusion school. After the kick-off in March, we had to interrupt again after four weeks due to Corona. We are now hoping for a smoother process.

However, we face major challenges. School operations are still restricted, and we are in the middle of the school year which lasts from April to end of March. Therefore, it is not easy to get children transferred from other public or private schools. Many children are currently not going to school because they have been used to staying at home since March 2020. Many parents are concerned that another wave of Covid is coming and are therefore waiting. In the countryside, many people do not really care whether their children go to school or not. And schools or government agencies usually do not care either. This is one of the reasons why a lot of persuasion has to be done with the parents. Parents and children are not used to the fact that regular school attendance is also an obligation. Regular exams, conscientious and structured lessons, attendance checks, discussions between teachers and parents are not given in many rural schools.

We currently have 45 children registered and will gradually integrate these children into the high-quality teaching classes. But there are big gaps in children's knowledge. Often, children from the higher grades of the public schools with low requirements do not know the material of a third or fourth grade. We also teach in Hindi and English and offer the opportunity to gain initial experience with a computer. And we combine teaching with playing to educate children with fun and ease. In addition, in many families it is not considered essential for girls to go to school.

We are convinced and optimistic that our approach will be successful in the long run. We also have the support of the local authority. But it will take many months, maybe even 2-3 years, for the school operations to settle down. But we know that it is worth investing this time. GIVE CHILDREN A FUTURE.
