Stories from the Field April 2022

By Simon Doble | Founder and Global CEO

Would you like to meet the incredible children of Timor Leste?

Located less than 700km north west of Darwin, Australia's most northern capital city, Timor Leste is home to approximately 1.3 million people. There are many different indigenous groups, with at least 15 different indigenous languages being spoken amongst the official and working languages of Tetun and Portuguese, and Indonesian and English respectively.

Timor Leste is a highly agrarian and rural society with almost 70% of the population living outside urban areas. Most people's homes are made from wood and thatch. Nearly one third of the population is illiterate. It's estimated over 20% Timorese people live on less that $1.90 per day. It is one of the world's poorest nations and the poorest country in Southeast Asia.

What inspires me is at the grassroots level, the people of Timor Leste are making progress - the communities we work with know the value of educating their children, access to clean drinking water has increased, access to sanitation has improved. I will be supporting the people of Timor Leste with solar systems because the sun setting should not limit your opportunity to thrive.

Watch how SolarBuddy lights are being used to improve children’s education at night.

SolarBuddy Partner snapshot

With One Seed is one of SolarBuddy's in-country expert partner NGOs. With a focus on developing capacity for subsistence communities, With One Seed, like SolarBuddy, has a long term vision which extends well beyond charity and aid.

Thank you With One Seed for building environmental practices that support sustainable living, and for helping children thrive with the gift of light.

SolarBuddy's Timor-Leste's partner, With One Seed, delivers your gift of solar light to children living in extremely remote communities. With dramatically deep valleys and a central rugged mountain range, well maintained roads are a luxury rarely extended. Delivery arrangements must also consider the extensive wet season and of course, the dark!

___________

Timor Leste is a beautiful country, with majestic mountains, magical coral reefs and wonderful, resilient people. I will continue to give the children there the support they need in order to thrive.

I think it's so much better when we do this together, so please do join me.
