Bridging the gap between indigenous youths
By Maisie Mayne | Fundraising intern
To our supporters,
Our initiative focuses on empowering Indigenous youth in Australia by addressing the challenges that often lead to educational disengagement and involvement with the criminal justice system. By enhancing their skills through culturally relevant methods, we aim to cultivate ambassadors for change within their communities and the broader Australian society.
Indigenous Australians face significant disparities in various life outcomes. Notably, First Nations children constitute approximately 60% of the youth prison population, despite comprising a much smaller percentage of the overall youth demographic.Additionally, life expectancy for Indigenous individuals is notably lower compared to non-Indigenous Australians. These disparities are further exacerbated by limited access to quality education, cultural misunderstandings within educational institutions, and socioeconomic disadvantages.
We invite you to join us in this vital mission. Your support can make a profound difference in the lives of Indigenous youths, fostering a brighter and more equitable future for all.
Thank you!

It's getting hot in Australia
By Eva Lloyd | Program Lead
We are dedicated to addressing the systemic inequities that contribute to the overrepresentation of Indigenous youth in the Australian justice system. Thanks to your generous donations, we have been able to make meaningful strides toward improving opportunities for these young people, helping to create pathways out of the justice system and into thriving, self-sustaining futures within their communities.
Impact of Your Donations
-
Increased Access to Education and Vocational Training
Donations have enabled us to provide educational scholarships and vocational training programs tailored to the needs of Indigenous youth, both in and out of the justice system. These programs empower young people by giving them the skills and qualifications necessary to secure employment, supporting their rehabilitation and reducing the risk of reoffending.
-
Cultural Empowerment and Identity Building
We have worked with local Elders and cultural leaders to offer cultural mentoring, community connection programs, and opportunities for young people to learn about their heritage. By strengthening cultural identity and pride, these initiatives foster resilience and a sense of belonging, reducing feelings of alienation that can contribute to criminal behaviour.
-
Mental Health and Wellbeing Support
Donations have helped us expand mental health services for Indigenous youth, providing access to culturally competent therapists, peer support groups, and trauma-informed care. These services are essential for addressing the underlying causes of offending behaviour, such as intergenerational trauma and the impact of systemic racism.
-
Youth Mentorship and Role Models
We have been able to establish mentorship programs where young people are paired with Indigenous role models who have successfully navigated challenges in their own lives. These mentors offer guidance, motivation, and a tangible example of how to overcome adversity, contributing to a positive shift in mindset and behaviour.
-
Community Engagement and Advocacy
Donations have allowed us to expand our advocacy work, engaging with policymakers and justice system leaders to push for systemic reform. This includes advocating for diversionary programs, restorative justice practices, and greater cultural competency within the legal system, all of which are crucial to breaking the cycle of Indigenous youth incarceration.
We have lots more to do and all our work is guided and influenced by the Indiginous community themselves, we keep their identities secure for security reasons however every decision we made is in partnership and as we move forward we are hoping to build more longer term sustianable solutions for everyone involved.
Thank You,
Eva
