We are so grateful to everyone that has believed in us and supported our project! We are glad to inform that in the week prior to hurricane Fiona, we were able to complete installing a total of 19 of the 20 cisterns! It was a community effort to gather resources and volunteer work to make it happen, and thanks to that, those 19 families were able to have access to clean water during the aftermath of the hurricane.
As you all know, eventhough hurricane Fiona was category 1, it hit hard our already weaken infrastructure and our community was completely isolated with all roads blocked for over a week due to fallen trees, landslides, collapsed roads and floods. In addition to this, we had a power outage that lasted 26 days and power service to our area has been intermittent since it was restored. Unfortunately, being without power in our community also means being without running water. It took local agencies almost three weeks to energize with power generators the water pumps that distributes water uphill to our community and, even after that, the service was also limited due to lack of diesel in the archipelago.
This is why we will continue to push for reaching our initial goal of raising $18,000 to purchase an additional five water cisterns for a total of 25. We are so close, only $4,632 to go!
As with the previous 20 cisterns, they will continue to go to homes where the most vulnerable members of the community live.
Together we can make it happen, now is the time to share our project with friends and family and continue supporting rural communities' right to clean water access.
