Peace and reconciliation through Rugby in Israel

February 2023 Update

By Ella Gibbs | Marketing and Communications Officer

On Wednesday 1st February 2023, after two dissapointing cancellations from striking and weather, the Peace and Reconciliation programme finally held their first successfull join coexistence session!

It was the first meeting of the Tag Rugby - Shared Life Programme. 7th grade students from four schools across the city came to participate: Alkarma, Leo Baek, Ahmidiyya and the Open-School. Over 60 male and female students competed in 6 mixed teams, playing and cooperating together in both defense and attack to have a successful tournament of sports activity.

This is only the second year of the project being held under the leadership and supervision of physical education in the district in cooperation with the schools sports association, sports authority in the municipality, and rugby union. Just as coordination and cooperation have gone into the programmes organisation, cooperation between the children has been shared. Being able to work together and over coming communication issues through team work and cooperation has been transformational for these children who are living in times of uncertainty and fear surrounding different faiths and beliefs.

To see the children come together and enjoy and harmonise with each other in this session is a wonderful breakthrough and one we can hopefully re-create again! While the day was successful in teaching the children new skills in rugby and identifying talent, the day was so much more than that. Learning and understanding more about each other and their beliefs and being able to form friendships regardless means a lot to the children have grown up being taught to fear what they don't know.

This is only the start for the Peace and Reconcilliation through rugby programme. With your support, we can continue these sessions into regular and thriving tournaments, welcoming more children to them and growing bonds of friendship and companionship even further. Thank you!
