Planting hope for hundreds of families

A handful of seeds and a touch of gardening know-how nourishes families and fights malnutrition.

More than 55% of children in the remote region of Jharkhand in India lack adequate nutrition. Together, we are changing this horrific statistic with an innovative solution:

Small-scale kitchen vegetable gardens are a practical, sustainable way to equip villagers with the means to grow their own nutrient-rich food.

Together with GlobalGiving and you, we have reached hundreds of families and improved quality of life by providing:

Training. Gardening know-how has faded and many villagers think they need tons of space and access to expensive resources in order to grow their own food. Karuna-Shechen is showing villagers how to grow nutritious, bountiful gardens from small spaces and limited resources.
Non-GMO seeds and organic fertilizers. Caring for soil and ensuring long-term sustainability is paired with education to increase variety for improved nutrition.
Ongoing support to households. Access to seeds and seedlings and ongoing trainings ensure gardens will continue to grow as a standard part of daily life. Villagers are also encouraged to exchange and share the vegetables they harvest, increasing collaboration and the overall wellbeing of their communities.

The impact of the project so far: together, we’re planting hope and providing a higher quality of life for families in need throughout the remote state of Jharkhand.

At Karuna-Shechen we are very excited with the results of this campaign so far, and with additional support from global-funders like you, we can help more families grow gardens. Our new goal is to assist 1,000 families.

Plant Kitchen Gardens Project Moving Forward to Success

Ganga and Her Harvest of Vegetables

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to send you this report about the successful last three months of the Plant a Kitchen Garden in India program GlobalGiving campaign that you so generously support. Your donations have helped us to introduce this innovative program to Jharkhand, a remote and very poor, neglected area.

Karuna-Shechen has made an assortment of seeds available to provide a nutritious diet for all and fight malnutrition. Organic seeds are packed a month in advance according to the season and distrubuted to the villagers.We also supply saplings of fruit-bearing trees like mango, guava, lemon,and Indian plum to promote healthy living.

So far 4468 households have been covered across 180 villages. 3,305 fruit-bearing plants have also been distributed along with seeds for vegetables, involving a total of 26,808 beneficiaries.

Let's hear from our beneficiaries:

Pinki, 22, lives with seven family members in Ujjwalpur village: "I have been receiving seeds and saplings for my kitchen garden from Karuna Shechen and feel very happy. I only have to buy the barest supplies such as flour, potatoes, lentils, and oil because I can grow vegetables in my own kitchen garden. Previously, I spent Rs.800-900/- for food for my family and now because of the garden I can save almost Rs.400-450/."

Ganga, aged 44, lives with her husband and one son in a neighboring village: "Karuna Shechen is providing seeds and saplings, and with the help of the motivators I have learned how to grow my own food. We even are taught how to use organic fertilizer and they built a small pond to provide water to help our plants. I can now give my family good food."

Thanks to your generosity, this fall many families are able to harvest food from the seeds and training you provided them.
