Dear friends and partners,
If you have been supporting us and following our work with adolescent girls in Cambodia, you would have heard us mention many times that there are 63 million girls globally who are not in school. However, new and alarming figures have emerged from UNESCO that there are actually 130.9 million girls around the world who have no access to education!!
Although there is a huge difference in the numbers, it doesn't mean that tens of millions more girls have stopped going to school but rather we now have better tools and access to those girls who are being denied an education.
When I think of those numbers its almost unfathomable to think that we could ever get all those girls in to school... but we cannot become overwhelmed.. we have always concentrated on the one before us and we will continue to do this currently in Cambodia.. but our mission is to be the voice and the enabler for as many girls as we can possibly help - we have a real situation on our hands and we must continue to fight for each and every girl. Today Cambodia – then hopefully the world!
Recently I spent many hours sifting through all the latest data of the current situation for girls - specifically adolescent girls both globally and in Cambodia. The figures are alarming.
There are numerous studies that have demonstrated that educating women and girls is the single most effective strategy to ensure the well-being and health of children and the long term success of developing economies.
Education empowers women to overcome discrimination. Girls and young women who are educated have greater awareness of their rights and greater confidence and freedom to make decisions that affect their lives, improve their health and boost their work prospects.
Although our numbers may be small we know our programs are working - when we compare our data with the national data for girls dropping out of education and completion rates at every grade we have 2.5 to 3 times success of keeping girls in school.
A figure we are very proud of today.
Our staff work incredibly hard. Supporting girls to stay in school is not just about giving them books, pens and a uniform - we have highly competent and determined social workers who work holistically with each girl and her world.. The school, family, friends, community, partners, Government - both local and national.
Our program’s success is only possible because you care. You have shown belief in our vision and our work. Your donations are making such a huge difference in the lives of so many young girls. We don’t want poverty to define their destiny. For such a small investment the returns are HUGE!
These are real girls with real dreams and a real hope for a bright and successful future.
These girls are now destined for greatness.
Thank you for your generous hearts.
Warmest wishes,
Julie
