Dear Supporter,
It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that we wish to report our team's success in saving a Great hornbill's nest on a Giant tree that we have brought under protection through your support 3 years' ago. The condition of the tree when we first observed it was precarious. Most of its branches were chopped and even then the Great hornbill was keeping its nest active on this tree. This is an indicator of two important factors that influence nesting and survival of Great hornbill. a) Availability of the food trees in the radious of 3-10 Kms 2) trees having suitable cavities for the female hornbill to lay eggs and rear the chick. Among these two the existence of giant trees with large enough cavities is decisive factor for survival of this majestic bird. It is for this very reason that we make every effort to safeguard such trees. After knowing the status of the tree and presence of hornbill nest, our team talked to the owner about the importance of conserving this tree and allowing the branches to grow so that the hornbill will have less difficulty in landing on tree as well as feeding the mother.
In this season, I was fortunate enough to time my visit to this particular Giant tree during the nesting season of the hornbill.
We waited for an hour for the hornbill to show up. It became clear to us that the bird had already spotted us well before we started looking at the tree and it was making sure that we are not posing any harm to the tree or the nest. For next twenty minutes or so, we could observe this charismatic bird feeding and caring for the family. It was an amazing and very satisfying experience.
In addition to this, our team managed to convince communities from two different villages from Sangameshwar block and Mandangad blocks for committing to Giant tree conservation. In this manner, we expanded our geographic scope for this initiative to Mandangad block in Ratnagiri district. We could bring 5 massive trees under conservation. The species are - Tetrameles nudiflora, Holoptelia integrifolia and Artocarpus heterophylla. We could also observe that two out of the 5 trees were used by honeybees to build their colonies. The giant trees offer innumerable ecosystem services and benefits to humans, we only need to have an eye for it.
Thanks for your continued interest in this initiative.
Best
