SELFDEFENCE ROCKS!!!

This story of Yasha is one of so many in India, where most of the women and girls don't know, that they have the right to defend themselves against violence:

"My name is Yasha, and I grew up in a large, close-knit family. My uncle, my father's younger brother, lived with us. Before he married, he repeatedly violated my personal space, touching me inappropriately. He'd lurk, waiting for opportunities to get close, to touch me. Fear became my constant companion, turning my own home into a place of dread. I was consumed by a mix of terror and revulsion. How could someone who was like a father figure do this? I was paralyzed by shame and fear, unable to confide in my parents. Even after his marriage, the unwanted advances continued, leaving me feeling dirty and broken. The weight of his actions clouded every aspect of my life, stealing my focus, my joy, and my confidence.

Then, a lifeline appeared. My school offered self-defense training, organized by Prabodhini. Stepping into that room felt like entering a sanctuary. As I listened to other girls share their experiences, the isolation that had suffocated me began to dissipate. I wasn't alone. Other girls had faced similar violations. The training provided a space for open dialogue, and the techniques we learned helped me reclaim my power.

A spark ignited within me. I realized I didn't have to carry this burden in silence. I decided to tell my parents. It was terrifying, but I found the courage. They listened, they believed me, and they acted. They told my uncle to move out.

The change was profound. The fear that had held me captive began to loosen its grip. The shame that had twisted my self-image started to fade. I was no longer a victim; I was a survivor. My confidence returned, stronger than before. I felt courageous, empowered, and whole.

I am no longer afraid. I no longer believe I am a bad girl. My uncle's behaviour has stopped. I am Yasha, and I am strong!

I am eternally grateful to Prabodhini for providing that crucial training. It didn't just teach me self-defense; it gave me back my voice, my dignity, and my life."

Help girls and women in India to stand for their right to protect themselves against sexual violence!

Thank you for your generosity to make this world a better place!
