"It's not my fault if my husband beats me"

By Daniela Raedsch | Project Referent

My name is Esha (name has been changed). I´m married. My husband married me because I am a very good cook. He only saw me as a wife who does the housework and cooks for him. He wasn't interested in the fact that I wanted to be more than that and had a wish to learn.

Before we got married, he promised me that I could continue my education. After marriage, however, he changed completely. His promise was forgotten. Whenever I tried to learn, he threw my books away or even burnt them. He kept beating me. I was helpless and knew no way out, and I tolerated his aggression and violence. He bullied and hurt me in many different ways. My life was a torture after marrying him.

Then I heard about Prabodhini self-defence training. And I attended a self-defence course that changed my life. I was able to talk to other women and girls about my experiences. I learnt that it is not my fault if my husband beats me and that I have the right to stand up for myself. Getting over my feelings of guilt and fear was an important step towards being able to live my life in a more self-determined way.

Now I no longer tolerate violence against me. I tell my husband clearly what I want. He has stopped beating me. And I'm allowed to learn and educate myself. I'm currently preparing for exams in computer technology and I'm really enjoying it.

Many thanks to Prabodhini for the new opportunities in my life!
