Self Defence for 1000 young girls in Nagpur, India

Chetana ‘’My name is Chetana (name changed). I attended Prabodhini’s self defense training, which was taking place in Aryaloka computer Institute. I learned many things and very useful techniques for women in that training. Many times, I have faced different types of violence in society.

Once I was travelling on the bus. One boy suddenly caught my hand. I used techniques which I learned in the training. But he didn’t leave my hand. Then I loudly shouted at him and said: “you caught my hand, leave my hand!”. Everybody on the bus started to look at us. He did not expect this, so he was shocked. Then some people said, that they would call the police. And they asked him to get off the bus. He then just got off the bus and ran away. People on the bus praised me for what I had done.

In the training I learned, that if one technique doesn’t work, try another and try until you are out of danger. I tried and succeeded. That gave me more confidence.

My name is Tamani (name changed). My family is very big with many family members. Until recently, my uncle, my father's younger brother, lived with us. He kept trying to approach me and touch my breasts. I was afraid of him. And I didn't have the courage to talk to my parents about it because I thought it was all my fault and that I was a bad girl. I was no longer safe in my own home. I could no longer concentrate on school and I lost my self-confidence.

But then I got the opportunity to take part in self-defence training at my school. Listening to the experiences and stories of other girls, I realised that I was not the only one facing sexual assault. I was able to talk openly about my situation. And the different self-defence techniques and the exchange helped me to overcome my fear. I decided to tell my parents about my uncle's behaviour. My parents understood me and they asked my uncle to move out of our house.

Now I am no longer afraid of him and I no longer feel like I am a bad girl. I feel confident and brave.
