Meet Evelyn, Professional Nurse

By Andrea Laynez | Coordinadora de Comunicacion

Evelyn is a charismatic and friendly young woman with a dream to serve her community as a professional nurse. Evenlyn is 22 years old, from Chajul, Guatemala, and is the second youngest of five siblings. This year, she is working on the final steps of completing her professional nursing degree. She is putting her academic knowledge into experience via practicums in hospital and community-based nursing. At the beginning of her internships, Evelyn shared that she felt a hesitancy that one experiences with any challenge. She was nervous to have initial contact with patients in the community, but soon realized that her training and identity allowed her to serve others. She loves supporting the people of the region, providing care and attention in the local language, Ixil. Evelyn found that her ability to speak to her patients in the local language, and to share their cultural identity, was equally as important to the people that she was treating; she has had patients express appreciation for her kindness and service, as well. Being able to put into practice all that she has learned in her University courses - as well as via the mentorship and training she receives from Filantropis - has made her fall even more in love with her career as a professional nurse.

The next step for Evelyn, after completing her practicums, will be to prepare for and pass a comprehensive exam, giving her the degree and credentials necessary to practice professionally. She will be doing this during the Fall semester. We are so grateful for the contributions that you all are making, and continue to make, to allow Chajulense students such as Evenlyn to gain their university degrees and to support their community. We are also so proud to see Evelyn fulfill her university dreams; we know that you join Filantropis in wishing her her success in her professional life and her desire to serve the community of Chajul.
