Through your continued support and donation to HBI’s Community Daycare Improvement Project powered by the GlobalGiving platform, two new needy daycare centers have been supported and aided this August 2019. Allow us to introduce these new daycares to you in this latest project report.
Pitpitac Community Daycare Center, Luna, La Union, Northern Philippines
Located in the heart of a remote fishing community, the Pitpitac Daycare Center is currently the second home of approximately 21 learners between the ages of 3 to 5 years old. Even if resources are scarce, the joint efforts of the daycare teacher, parents, and a nearby public elementary school enabled the community to create a suitable and safe space for early childhood education.
Unfortunately, resources can only be stretched so far - so while the community has done a great job in improving and maintaining the daycare infrastructure, needed materials like books, toys, and audio-video equipment that can stimulate young minds are severely lacking in the Pitpitac Daycare Center. Parents who earn less than Php 100 (approximately 2 dollars) every work day contribute whatever little they can share to the daycare center, while the daycare teacher has to think of creative ways to improve classroom facilities. “I usually translate English story books to the local dialect by drawing them as story books so that we save money on books,” the Pitpitac Daycare Teacher shared. “I also draw and paint the classroom so that children would feel more at ease during our sessions, saving money from hiring professionals to do it.”
On August 28, 2019, your support has provided the Pitpitac Daycare Center with a package of learning materials such as story books and picture books (in English, Filipino, and Ilocano – the local dialect); educational and manipulative toys geared towards toddlers and early learners mostly donated by SM North Edsa (who chose to donate in kind when they saw HBI’s GlobalGiving Project page); and an LED TV with educational videos for children. Your help brought smiles not only to the faces of the children, but also to their parents and daycare teachers who beamingly look on as the kids read their new books and play with their new toys.
Cabalitocan Community Daycare Center, Luna, La Union, Northern Philippines
The Cabalitocan Community Daycare Center shared a similar problem with that of Pitpitac Daycare Center – the daycare infrastructure is there, but materials and equipment cannot be provided by the teacher, parents, and community volunteers, resulting to its 25 children-enrolees to make do with the limited toys, books, and art supplies available to them.
On the same date, your support provided the Cabalitocan Daycare Center with books, educational toys, educational videos, and an LED TV. To say that the kids were excited about their new school materials is a big understatement as each child hurriedly opened their new books, played with their new toys, and watched story videos on their new audio-video equipment.
One student in particular: a shy 4-year-old named Romel who his teacher said has a hard time socializing with his classmates, gravitated towards a toy xylophone provided through your donation. Not only was he happily playing and banging on his new musical instrument, he also shared his new favorite daycare toy with his classmates and with the HBI Team. “This is the first time that I’ve seen him play with other kids or speak with other people aside from his parents,” according to the Cabalitocan Daycare teacher.
GlobalGiving Came for a Visit!
Apart from all the new toys, books, and classroom equipment provided last August 28, 2019, GlobalGiving’s Grace Yu came for a visit to the two new daycare centers and to the Antonino Daycare Center in Balaoan, La Union - one of the four daycare centers who originally received support from the project. Grace was able to meet with the HBI Team, speak with the daycare teachers, interact with parents and children, and get an idea of how HBI works in a community or in a school.
On our part, we value Grace and GlobalGiving's visit as we were able to discuss and share the many ways on how our organizations can link and work together towards creating sustainable interventions and programs that would answer the most-felt needs of our beneficiaries and stakeholders.
Our Continued Thanks to You
This report will not end without HBI giving thanks to the numerous donors and advocates of the Daycare Improvement Project. To date, we have raised a total of US$ 8,127 from 87 donations. We hope to reach out to more in-need daycare centers in the future but for now, we thank all of you in behalf of the 252 children & teachers in six La Union daycare centers for your kindness and generosity.
Until the next report!
