The past four months have shown that the Daycare Improvement Project has evolved and made room to not only cater to daycare centers in impoverished and far-flung communities in La Union, but to also support other public institutions that cater to poor children. For this period, there are three notable activities as follows:
School Support Program through the Airbnb Community Fund
Amid the initial COVID-19 surge last March 2020, the Philippines stopped in-person classes for all public education students. When schooling finally resumed in October 2020, the Philippine education department’s solution was a blend of remote-learning options: online platforms, educational TV and radio, and printed modules. With Bangladesh re-opening their schools in September 2021, the Philippines remains the only country in the world as of April 2022 to not yet fully resume in-person classroom learning for its public education sector.
In rural and remote areas like La Union, public schools cannot implement online learning methods due to inaccessible and unreliable internet connections. As such, schools have been pushing through via printed student modules. The modules have to be prepared by the teachers for every enrolled student which means that rural public schools with no means to buy their own printers are left behind. Ultimately, it is the students who suffer.
Thus, apart from the implementation of the Community Health and Hygiene Pantry that supported 400 families with complete hygiene kits, medicines, vitamins, and other disinfecting materials, HBI through the support of the Airbnb Community Fund also provided eight (8) public elementary schools in the the municipalities of Bangar, Sudipen, and Luna all in the La Union Province with heavy-duty printers and related consumables (printer ink supplies, bond papers, and other instruction materials) as a way to support students and teachers in their distance modular learning classes. These eight schools are the Sinapangan Elementary School, Luzong Sur Elementary School, Maria Cristina Elementary School, General Prim Elementary School, Tallaoen Elementary School, Ayaoan Elementary School, Suyo Elementary School, and Seng-ngat Elementary School. The combined student population of these schools is approximately 1,200 students who would now benefit from more printed modules that are complete with lesson details and exercises.
It is expected that Philippine schools would begin its gradual re-opening for in-classroom learning by mid-May 2022. Partner teachers in HBI Project Areas mentioned that the face-to-face learning in the time of COVID-19 would be a hybrid learning environment that combines shortened class hours with modular or online distance learning. With that said, even if schools re-open, the provided printers and materials by the Airbnb Community Fund would still be very beneficial to students and teachers.
Community Health Center Support
Through the in-kind donation of Vitamin Angels Philippines (who came to know of HBI through their GlobalGiving Project Page), over 15 community health centers in Metro Manila, Pampanga, and La Union have received supplies of Vitamin A supplementation and dewoming for children ages 0-5 years old. Over 1,500 children are estimated to benefit from this intervention and support. Apart from children's Vitamin A supplements and deworming tablets, the support from Vitamin Angels also enabled HBI to deliver needed Multiple Micronutrient Supplementation (MMS) tablets to these health centers for dispensing to approximately 1,000 pregnant women. MMS for pregnant women has long been a request by HBI partner community health centers who have been dealing with an increase in tending to pregnant community members.
Continuing Daycare Improvements
The Daycare Improvement Program is staying true to its original aims of improving public daycare centers. For this reporting period, the daycare centers were provided with additional toys, big books, story books, and other educational classroom materials in preparation for the gradual re-opening of public daycare facilities in the Philippines.
Our Heartfelt Thanks
We always save the best - the portion where we thank our donors and advocates - for last. In behalf of all the children, schools, teachers, and parents you have helped through your unsolicited donations, HBI wants to thank you from the bottom of their eternally grateful hearts. These activities would not have been possible without your support. We promise to continue doing our very best work as we move forward to living in the New Normal.
Until our next report!
