Thank you so much for supporting this project bringing life changing smokeless stoves to households. Here is an update from Brighter Communities Worldwide staff members Beatrice Wambia and Shadrack Kipngeno.
Shadracks tells us - On Monday this week a training workshop began for a group of 24 new smokeless stove installers. The training is running for 3 days. The trainee installers visited stoves installed by Brighter Communities Worldwide 6 months ago to find out how they are working out and carry out a survey with the household. They have spent time in the classroom learning about the need for smokeless stoves, how it is part of the Healthy Homestead and the construction of the stove and the design. On Tuesday they took part in building stoves in the community and by dividing into teams they managed to help get 10 stoves installed. They are very excited and ready to install in their communities after more practicals on Wednesday.
Beatrice says - Our stoves programme has benefited many people across the county. We have managed to install 339 stoves so far this year, distributed 836 chimneys to the stove installers. The Installers scout for potential households in their communities and request for the chimneys from BCW. They are issued with the stoves and tasked to install and educate the households on its importance and how a healthy homestead should look like.
We endeavor to empower the Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) in many ways. We involve them in the stove installation programme by training them as Installers. This empowers them economically as they can use their skills to install stoves for householders for a fee.
The stoves are installed depending with the specific needs of the householder, so it can be mud stove, brick and cement stove. They do take at least two hours to construct a single stove provided all necessary material are available. The smokeless stove uses less firewood for cooking. It's proven that the stove is more economical when it comes to firewood consumption with an efficiency of about 30% compared to the traditional cooking methods.
We aim to install the smokeless stoves in 1200 households during the year. Through the smokeless stove programme mothers and the community at large are happy and healthier because the smokeless stove is easy to use, once lit the fire does not stop unless the firewood feed is stopped, there is no need of straining ones lungs to blow air into the stove to fan the flame as it is with the traditional 3 stone fire.
“We are using less firewood compared to the 3 stone model stove. My house looks cleaner and my eyes do not irritate because of smoke. Thank you Brighter Communities Worldwide for the support” – Feedback from Betty, a resident of Lelagoi village in Soin/Sigowet Sub county.
