Smokeless stoves - all about the chimney

By Rose Hennessy | Brighter Communities Worldwide

Thank you for your support of the smokeless stoves installations in Kericho county. We're delighted to bring you a short update on how the project is progressing.

The difference between before and after installation is instant - as soon as the construction of the stove is complete and the chimney is attached a small fire is lit and everyone involved stands outside watching the chimney, waiting for the smoke and once it appears there is singing and dancing in celebration!

This simple piece of tin made locally in Londiani town, extracts the smoke transforming the space inside to a bright, clear atmosphere from a dark, smokey place where it was hard to see and even harder to breath.   These photographs are from a distribution of chimneys to community health volunteers and stove installers at Cheptuiyet.  There have been 150 stoves installed since the beginning of this year.

The indoor photographs were taken in December during follow up visits to homes that had stoves installed 6 months before.  Among the changes the householders noted are - they are using less firewood; spending less time cooking as the new stoves retain heat and cook faster; the stoves are safer; there is no smoke in the room and the walls are cleaner; there are no sore eyes and there is less time spent collecting firewood.

They also said they are saving money because they need less firewood.  Each time firewood is collected from the forest a permit fee must be paid and some families will have to purchase firewood if they are a long distance from a forest.  With the new stoves, the householders said they are using the money saved for paying school fees, buying household necessities, poultry production and expanding farming activites.

If you would like to donate again to this project - the next match funding campaign with GlobalGiving is on April 4th to 8th when all donations up to $50 will be match at 50% - and did you know that all new monthly donations will have their first donation matched at 100% after four total payments.
