Empowering Tanzanian Women

By Alexia Lizarraga | Partnerships and Climate Fellowship Manager

Dear supporters,

We are delighted to share an update on the impact of Cheka Sana's programs, made possible by your generous support on GlobalGiving. Cheka Sana’s initiatives are dedicated to empowering vulnerable young women and girls on the streets of Tanzania, offering vital life skills, psychosocial support, self-defence training, and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Since November 2023, Cheka Sana has conducted 48 weekly life skills sessions for 37 young mothers and girls in Bugogwa and Kirumba. Participants learn problem-solving techniques, decision making and communication skills. Cheka Sana's psychosocial support includes one-to-one and group sessions facilitated by social workers during street outreach visits. These sessions address the emotional and social needs of street-born mothers and at-risk groups, helping them develop coping techniques for the challenges they face on the streets.

Weekly self-defence training sessions empowered 37 young mothers with skills to prevent abuse and strengthen their ability to protect themselves.

Additionally, Cheka Sana provided a one-day training for the young mothers and girls to help them select the type of work they might want to try. The training equipped 37 young mothers and girls with business knowledge and entrepreneurship skills, to enable them to make informed choices about different jobs and income sustainability.  21 participants chose tailoring, 13 selected hairdressing, 2 opted for decoration, and 1 chose catering.

Zulfa is taking part in the tailoring program. At just 18 years old, she faced immense challenges as a young mother responsible for her family's basic needs. Despite many obstacles and having to resort to commercial sex work for survival, Zulfa never lost hope. She joined Cheka Sana’s program and received comprehensive support, including life skills, psychosocial counselling, and self-defence training. Participating in the tailoring program provided her with vocational skills and a newfound sense of purpose, enabling her to envision a brighter future for herself and her child.

“Thank you Cheka Sana for bringing back my smile, happiness and peace of mind. To be honest I was desperate and lost hope when I got pregnant. But now I see myself in a new version, with a good mindset and a picture of my future life. I am happy because my dream is going to be true”.

Your contributions have made a tangible impact on the lives of individuals like Zulfa, empowering them to break free from poverty and vulnerability. We are deeply grateful for your support and dedication to work of Cheka Sana. Together, we are creating brighter futures for vulnerable young women and girls in Tanzania.
