This quarter we focused on Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary that was established in 1998 for the care and welfare of entrusted chimpanzees while conserving the ecosystem of the sanctuary. The sanctuary was established through a collaboration between national and international organizations with the ultimate aim of developing and implementing a long-term strategy for conservation of chimpanzees and their habitat in Uganda and beyond.
Currently, the sanctuary is home to 52 orphaned rescued chimpanzees and Chimpanzee Trust provides for their welfare needs including veterinary health care, feeding, infrastructure, and staffing.
How the funds received through GlobalGiving were used
1.0 Chimpanzee feeding
The funds raised were used for procurement of food for the 52 chimpanzees. The menu for the chimps was reviewed in 2021 by nutritionists from Canada, Drs Izzy Hirji and Sophia Marin with support from caregivers and Chimpanzee Trust veterinarians to provide a more nutritious and efficient diet. The review was based on physical appearance and review of the health check records of the chimpanzees. The revised menu was piloted in October to December of 2021 and it was rolled out in January 2022. Some items on the old menu were dropped and replaced with new ones. The items dropped included green beans, maize cobs, water melon and garden eggs. These were replaced with nakati, sukuma wiki, red beans, lentils okra, red onions, and green pepper. Dry rations including the maize flour/corn meal, millet flour and soy flour were procured as well.
2.0 Enrichment
An enrichment schedule for the chimpanzees was developed and enrichment materials including hay, honey, hammocks, popping corns, peanuts and sunflower seeds were procured and provided to the chimpanzees for comfort and as rewards. This was done to enhance the five freedoms as defined by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) i.e Freedom from hunger and thirst; Freedom from thermal and physical discomfort; Freedom from pain, injury and disease; freedom from fear and distress; and Freedom to express normal behavior.
3.0 Veterinary care
The chimpanzees were monitored by the veterinarian and caregivers for any signs of illness and injuries and in this quarter, 15 chimpanzees sustained minor injuries that were treated and healed. These injuries were partly attributed to the integration of captive born chimpanzees, Bolly and Themba in the community.
Chimpanzees were dewormed with albendazole dependent on the worm burden determined from screening of the fecal samples.
Chimpanzee above 30 years were given multivitamins on a monthly basis to boost their body immunity.
4.0 Protection of staff from COVID-19.
Management ensured that staff, visitors and volunteers adhere to COVID19 SOPs and at the peak on omicron variant in the country, funds received from GlobalGiving were used to procure antigen rapid diagnostic kits that were used to screen staff, visitors and staff who accessed the sanctuary.
5.0 Holding facility cleaning
The funds were used to procure cleaning materials and disinfectants for the holding facility where the chimpanzees spend a night. The cleaning and disinfection is done daily and this helps to promote hygiene and minimize transmission of the disease causing pathogens in the chimp community.
