Progress report- support a chimpanzee

By Dr Titus Mukungu | Project Contributor

Chimp food

During the month, our support orphaned and wild chimpanzees campaign, we have managed to carry out the below activities to smooth our operations.

1.0 Chimpanzee feeding

The funds raised were used for the procurement of food for the 51 chimpanzees. The food was supplied 9 times in the quarter with a 10 days interval between each delivery. The food composed of fresh fruits and vegetables including avocado, bananas, cabbage, carrots, cassava, cucumber, eggplant, green beans, jackfruit, maize (corn), orange, pawpaw (papaya), pineapple, sweet potato, tomato and watermelon and dry rations including the maize flour/cornmeal, millet flour and soy flour. Chimpanzees were fed 4 times a day following a menu that was designed to provide a balanced diet to the individuals.

2.0 Enrichment

Enrichment programmes at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary are to provide a mentally and physically enriching environment specific to chimpanzee species in our care. These materials include hay, honey, peanuts and sunflower seeds which we were enabled to procure and provide to the chimpanzees for comfort and as rewards.

3.0 Veterinary care

Chimpanzees at the sanctuary are prone to injuries sustained as a result of fights within the community attributed to competition for mates and hierarchy. Some of the injuries are severe and requires surgical intervention.

The funds donated were used to procure veterinary supplies used in the treatment of surgical and medical cases encountered. In addition, chimpanzees were given dewormers and multivitamins to control helminths and to boost their immunity.

4.0 Staff personal protective equipment

The sanctuary has a team of dedicated staff that ensure that the chimpanzees received the best care by feeding and treating the chimpanzees and cleaning the facilities where the chimpanzee's nest. To protect the staff from getting infections while cleaning chimpanzee facilities, personal protective equipment including facemasks, face shields, gloves, overalls and gumboots were procured and provided to the chimpanzee caregiving team.

Staff have already been screened routinely for Covid-19 and we have only had three cases since January 2021, which individuals fully recovered. This quarter, all staff are to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Management of Chimpanzee Trust that manages Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is grateful to the donors who have generously supported the operations of the sanctuary during the hard economic times brought about by the COVID19 pandemic. The sanctuary mainly depends on donations and grants to fund the sanctuary operations. As such, the Trust requests a continuous donation towards the welfare and veterinary care of the chimps through the GlobalGiving fundraising platform.
