Returning to normal

By Lucija Rozic | Team member

Graduates performance night
Graduates performance night

Of course, it is the new normal where some activities are online and others just like before, workshops face to face. But the most emotional activity - graduation - was held in the theater, like years before, but this time without an audience and the theater play. Nevertheless, we had some participant's performances like singing, playing music, and sharing experiences. Despite the fact that the majority of this group's activity was held online, there is a connection between the participants and harmonious group synergy.

This year, adjusting to current reality and new dynamics, we recruited 13 participants who will receive the standard reintegration program and 7 who will participate virtually. The same goes for new volunteers; we have 18 new volunteers where some will support only virtually and others both virtually and physically.

Besides the reintegration program, we are implementing an educational program for Caregivers in the city of Santiago. Caregivers have one of the main roles in the psychosocial development of institutionalized youth, which plays a huge factor in their social reinsertion, but they don't have the tools, education nor mental preparedness to take such an important role.

The majority of the caregivers are women coming from rural and low-income areas, with minimum education. Others are ex-beneficiaries of the orphanage that just took a different role inside the institution because they are afraid to leave it. The type of job they do is very often demanding in hours, which exceeds the capacity of caregivers, leads them to burn out and develop hostility towards the youth in their charge.

The program provides the following:

Tools to manage the stress of the position
Generalities of the adolescent development
Knowledge and importance of creating an affectionate bond for the healthy development of the adolescent
Strategies for effective communication and tools to achieve it
Tools to recognize and handle violence and abuse

Stay tuned for more news after the summer!

Sincerely,

Your TaV team
