Another great year ending

Two years have passed since we joined Global Giving, and during this time we have worked hard to understand and learn how to implement our program in different types of orphanages and substitute homes. We have successfully accompanied 30 young people on their path of self-awareness and preparation for independence. Some of them are soon to be graduates from technical careers and others are discovering what is their vocation.

This year has served us to learn where do we want to go as organisation, what our limits are and how to overcome them. Starting next year we are taking all those learnings and preparing to support one new institution.

In 2018 we have spent 1000 hours investing in our participants through different activities, more specifically:

276h in Workshops
229h in Mentoring
197h in psychological follow-up
300h on Individual follow-up

We are finishing this beautiful year by preparing a theatre play "The Garden of Friendship" which was chosen by the participants. The play is representing their time in the program where they first had to pass through a path of self discovery in order to be able to create real friendships.

Hopefully we will be able to share the success of the play in the report, until then all the best for the upcoming holidays.

Every great achiever is inspired by a great mentor

"In 5 years I will be able to rent a room and live alone. Starting to save now, in 10 years I will be eligible to take a loan and buy my own house”. sounds like something simple to achieve in a country with the highest GDP in the central american region. But considering high social difference classes and that these words were said by an 18-year-old girl, coming from a high social risk area, that has been living all her life in a shelter home and that a year and a half ago, she did not know what she would do in the next two weeks, then the phrase carries more strength and impact.

But this is not all, this young woman did not communicate and obtaining information was an arduous task. A few weeks ago she said this sentence within a 20 minute presentation with her mentor who has accompanied her for the past eight months.

In Transicion a la Vida we strive that our young beneficiaries can move towards a life plan that helps them project themselves in medium and long term and in this way achieve stability that does not lead them to a precocious pregnancy or back to risk. Our mentoring program - EleMentor accompanies our future graduates in preparation for their path after the program.

Our different programs seek to give them all the tools, but without a doubt EleMentor plays a key role, bringing them closer to a "one to one" guide with young adults with whom they can identify. Each mentor goes through a selection process, interviewes, signs a letter of commitment for one year and is assigned to the beneficiary with the closest common interests.

In these meetings they must follow a guide with goals and objectives that can be achieved in a period of time, these measurements are supervised by a psychologist who meets monthly with the mentors to evaluate and make adjustments.

The presentation where we heard this phrase from the beginning, was the rehearsal for what will be the closing of this group in October, having reached 82 hours between:

workshops
mentor and apprentice meetings
mentor and our team meetings

9 beneficiaries presented their progress, the current status of their goals with their mentors who mostly said they won not only an apprentice but a friend and that this would be maintained over time.

EleMentor is an excellent complement to our social reinsertion program because being accompanied by an older, more experienced person that believes in you, builds the confidence our participants need to overcome basic life obstacles.

Steady but sustainable growth

Our first quarter of 2018 has been focused on getting to know new participants and preparing the graduates for their career plan and independ life. At this moment we are counting on 28 participantes from 5 different substitute homes.

The focus has been divided between:

75h of workshops focusing on subjects as self-esteem, self-awareness, values, creating community between the new participants, how to manage personal finances etc...
80h of individual follow-up where we work on personal plan and focus on strenghtening participants habilities.
50h of psychological accompaniment where we attend specific issues and focus how to resolve problems.

Our other focus is screening one new shelter home focused on youth in interior of the country where the access to education is limited. Since the access to the home is also complicated we are planning program implementation for 2019. To progress towards this we have started expaning our team so we could cover human resources needed to expand to more far regions.

Right now we are counting on six facilitatores that are responsible for workshops delivery each saturday and ten mentors that are guiding our participants in their personal and career plan.

In order to keep on promoting education we have changed the venue of our workshops to one university where the participants are exposed to positive, educational environment. By the end of this year our goal is to achieve that 90% of our participants graduates or continues with their higher education.
