Kulika Uganda Project Progress Report
Submission Date: January 3rd 2023
This report covers the period August – December 2022. It is the 7th report since initial project funds were received in October 2020.
Training activities
a) Women in eastern Uganda
Of the 100 women engaged in the briquette project in eastern Uganda, 20 women were skilled in making minor mechanical repairs such as removing and fixing crusher blades, adjustment of the mixer to clear the pathways, clean and re-fix the molds for briquette extrusion. The groups have made a total of 673 kgs of briquettes.
Management Committees
Each group selected a committee of 4 members as leaders to oversee the management of the machines. These leaders supervise the location and usage of machines and ensure that all women have equal opportunity to use them to extrude their briquettes, machines are in good working condition and are safe.
b) Women in central Uganda
At least 46 homes have embraced briquette making and use as a source of clean and safe cooking fuel. From the field reports, one group has so far made and used 150 kgs of briquettes. The groups will intensify the growing of maize and soy bean to obtain the raw materials for more briquette making.
c) Intern Students
Fifty-two (52) students (29 females and 23 males) from two Ugandan institutions of higher learning were trained on briquette making and use. The students were trained using manual and motorized machines. Although this was part of the internship training package, students expressed interest to learn briquette making which they could extend to their communities after their training.
d) Kulika Training Centre
The training centre as an incubation centre has continued to train communities in briquette making as well as popularizing the enterprise. During the period, at least 5,025kgs have been made and sold to the nearby communities compared to 3,950kgs of the previous reporting period.
Plan for the coming quarter:
Appreciation and request: The funds received by Kulika has greatly supported the project since 2020, through sensitization meetings and trainings, acquisition of training materials and purchase of equipment.
We continue to appeal for additional support to reach out to more communities in dire need of safe and relatively cheaper alternative fuel energy for cooking.
