This year, due to the pandemic, we realize more the importance of disaster/ disease prevention education in a young age! Our frontline social workers have found out the youths experiencing a big challenge in disaster/ disease prevention and via the educational activities/activities renewed their knowledge!
According to research, Taiwan is in a high hazardous area facing more than 3 different kinds of natural disasters. more than 90% of the population and land will fall victims if multiple natural disasters strike. However, we took too lightly the fact that we are in close proximity to such dangers even though we are living in an environment where typhoon and earthquake are frequent.
The Mustard Seed Mission has long devoted to disaster preventive works. We held a disaster/ disease prevention education camp in MS Youth Home. With 3 themes on the agenda: Fire, earthquake and disease prevention, we led the children to renew their knowledge and learn the most updated and correct concept of disaster prevention. During the activity, social workers examined whether the youths have acquired the correct knowledge on fire and earthquake disaster prevention through Q & A session. In addition, there were drills for the youths to practice self-rescue during an earthquake and while caught on fire. It happened that there were no desks at the scene, the social workers took this opportunity letting the youths practice how to shelter themselves without any furniture at the scene of an earthquake. It helps them to better comprehend the concept of disaster prevention.
While all the youths were wearing face masks during the activity in order to comply with the government policy of disease prevention, their enthusiasm to learn have not diminished. Everyone was eagerly sharing what they knew about disaster prevention.
During phase 2 of the activity, the social worker led the youths through picture books to learn about Covid-19 and disease prevention. When it was mentioned in the book that the coronavirus can be spread through various means, the youths realized why it is important to wear face masks and to wash their hands frequently. It was also designed a practice activity so that youths can apply the knowledge they learned in their daily life.
Through advocacy and dedication made by the social workers, youths are taught in a young age on self-protection and become little ambassadors for disaster and disease prevention!
