Empower 300 Colombian Children: Teaching Peace

New year and great projects

CEPALC is continuing its work with children from different parts of the country. We are bringing our message of peace and values for coexistence with a new group called CRUZ DEL GUAYABO, also in indigenous zenú land. There we've been able to work with more than 100 children that, like other groups with CEPALC, have a shortage in drinking water and electricity among other things.

We're also continuing the work in CRUZ CHIQUITA and there we have been able to have a great number of girls that since being part of our work, have reclaimed their rights and denounced injustices in their communities. Through theater we have been able to transmit the theme of prevention of child sexual abuse.

In Boyacá the work has had very important results because children from MORCA have been able to make audiovisual products to reflect on what they learn in the workshops. Children who would normally work in mines are in training processes with CEPALC and come to see life in a new way, more critically and with more hope. Now we share the LEARNING BY DOING methodology of the institution with children of Mongua, another small mining city of Boyacá.

CEPALC continúa su trabajo con niño y niñas de diferentes partes del país. El nuevo grupo con quien estamos llevando nuestro mensaje de paz y valores para la convivencia se llama CRUZ DEL GUAYABO, también es en tierra indígena zenú y allí logramos iniciar trabajo con más de cien niños y niñas que al igual que otros grupos de CEPALC tienen carencias de agua potable, de electricidad entre otras.

Continuamos además el trabajo en CRUZ CHIQUITA y allí logramos tener una gran cantidad de niñas que desde que hacen parte de nuestros trabajos, reclaman sus derechos y denuncian injusticias en sus comunidades. Por medio del teatro logramos trasmitir el tema dela prevención de abuso sexual infantil.

En Boyacá el trabajo ha tenido frutos muy importantes porque niños y niñas de MORCA han logrado hacer productos audiovisuales para reflejar lo que se aprende en los talleres; en el pasado quedó la idea de niños y niñas trabajando en las minas, quienes están en procesos de capacitación con CEPALC ven la vida con otra mirada, más crítica y esperanzadora. Ahora compartimos el APRENDER-HACIENDO de la institución con niños y niñas de Mongua, otra pequeña ciudad minera de Boyacá.

Ending this year with new friend and projects

Taller mujeres Cordoba

During this time in the Morca section of Sogamoso in Bogayá we have been continuing the work with girls ages 12 to 18, with the message of rights and of self-empowerment. Additionally, the message of responsible sex has become very clear with these girls and teens who know they have the right to live out their sexuality the way they want. With more responsibility, this group has not had any young pregnancies for the past two years.

With the group of women from the San Andrés de Sotavento's Zenú indigenous population, we managed to start a radio program called FRECUENCIA JUVENIL, in which women from ages 14 to 18 talk about themes of gender equality in a machista indigenous society like that in Zenú culture. The program airs every other Saturday on TUCHÍN radio station. We also have the opportunity to start a program about children's rights on this station and hope to have a space on the radio for children of the Zenú community to express themselves and defend their rights.

In the city of Bogotá, the work with the children has been fruitful. We are sure that the radio programs we do on ENCUENTRO RADIO with the children have taught them to say NO TO DISCRIMINATION, NO TO EXCLUSION, YES TO PEACE, and YES TO INCLUSION. More than 70 children in Bogotá and more than 150 children and teens at the national level have benefited from workshops on the empowerment of rights, working side-by-side to educate about peace, love, and understanding.

Durante este periodo de trabajo, en la vereda MORCA, en Sogamoso, en BOYACÁ hemos continuado el trabajo con niñas en edad de los 12 a los 18 años, a quienes les hemos logrado transmitir el mensaje de sus derechos y del empoderamiento de los mismos. Además, el mensaje de una sexualidad responsable a quedado muy claro en estas niñas y adolescente que saben que tienen derecho a vivir su sexualidad como ellas quieran, con la mayor responsabilidad, por alguna razón en este grupo no se presentan embarazos a temprana edad desde hace dos años.

Con el grupo de mujeres jóvenes de San Andrés de Sotavento, población indígena zenú, logramos posicionar un programa de radio llamado FRECUENCIA JUVENIL, en el que las mujeres entre los 14 y los 18 años hablan de temas de igualdad de género en una sociedad indígena machista como lo es la cultura Zenú, el programa se emite los sábados cada 15 días en la emisora de TUCHÍN. En esta misma emisora tenemos la posibilidad de iniciar un proceso sobre derechos de los niños y las niñas que esperamos tenga un espacio radial para que niños y niñas de la comunidad Zenú se expresen y defiendan sus derechos.

En la ciudad de Bogotá el trabajo con niñas y niños ha sido bastante fructífero, tenemos la seguridad que los programas radiales que hacemos en ENCUENTRO RADIO con la población infantil ha logrado que sean seres humanos convencidos de NO A LA DISCRIMINACIÓN, NO A LA EXCLUSIÓN, SÍ A LA PAZ, SÍ A LA INCLUSIÓN. Son más de setenta niños y niños que en Bogotá se han visto beneficiados de los talleres sobre empoderamiento de los derechos y son más de 150 niños y niñas y jóvenes a nivel nacional con quienes trabajamos hombro a hombro para educarnos en la paz, el amor y la comprensión.

Exciting times for CEPALC

The last few months have been very productive and exciting for the CEPALC team. Since the beginning of June, thanks to you and your support, we were able to do 22 workshops in different cities throughout Colombia. In these workshops we played, we discussed, we sang, and we did crafts with over 390 girls and boys who better know about their rights and how to stand up for those rights every workshop they attend.

As always, we used different methods of communication and art for our workshops including, radio, video, theater, puppets, music, and painting. Using these methods, we talked about important topics like how to preserve the earth, child labor, diversity, respect for our bodies, and children’s rights in general.

One example of CEPALC’s impact is the Benitez Brothers. This is a group of children who have worked in coal mines in the department of Bóyaca. After attending several workshops, they have been able to produce videos that speak about their context and the issues that surround it. Estos han sido unos meses muy productivos y emocionantes para todo el equipo de CEPALC, todo gracias a ustedes y sus amables donaciones. Desde inicio de junio hemos podido realizar 22 talleres en varias ciudades de Colombia, en estos talleres jugamos, hablamos, cantamos y pintamos con más de 398 niños y niñas quienes gracias a CEPALC cada vez conocen mejor sus derechos y cómo reclamarlos.

Como siempre, hemos usado todas las posibilidades que nos brinda la comunicación y el arte (Radio, video, teatro, títeres, música, pintura) para hablar sobre temas importantes como el cuidado de la tierra, el trabajo infantil, la diversidad, el respeto por nuestro cuerpo y los derechos de los niños y las niñas en general.

Un ejemplo concreto de los resultados del trabajo de CEPALC es la historia de los hermanos Benitez, unos niños que fueron trabajadores de minas de carbón en el departamento de Boyaca y que ahora gracias a las capacitaciones han podido iniciar su vida como pequeños productores de videos, con contenido crítico.
