Dear Sponsors:
We hope that the beginning of the second semester of 2024 has been good for you. These last few months have brought many challenges and opportunities for our work with members of the Wayuu communities and but also many positive achievements that allow us to continue working with them.
As part of the training process that we have been developing in collaboration with SENA, the women of the Koushalain, tutchonka and ipashirrain communities were taking classes on artisan weaving and improving their weaving techniques. On our part and thanks to their donations, we have been able to provide each woman with a weaving kit that includes needles, thread, stitch markers, among other implements necessary for the proper development of the classes. In each of the communities we had a first group of 30 women who participated 4 hours, twice a week to the classes taught by the tutors.
In terms of educational training, we had a good reception to the classes that the teachers provided to the communities. In recent months, the classes have focused on perfecting the details of the Wayuu backpacks in order to achieve better quality in the final product. The communities have also learned about sales processes and the value of the products; this has been fundamental for the women to be aware of the real value of their work and to be able to define a price for their products. This change in the women's mentality has influenced their empowerment and personal growth.
On the other hand, in the area of agriculture, we have been making progress on some issues in conjunction with the FAO. We started the adaptation of half a hectare for the creation of a new community vegetable garden in the community of Tutchonka. It is expected that in the coming months this adaptation work will be completed, and by the end of 2024 this orchard will be in operation.
Although the project has been working properly, we have had some inconveniences because due to weather changes, there was a windstorm that destroyed the chicken coop in the community of Koushalain, so we had to relocate the hens to prevent them from getting sick due to the rains. However, apart from this eventuality, there were no other emergencies or problems during these months.
Our plan is to continue contributing in a positive way to the 3 communities with which we work in the agricultural and artisanal areas so that the communities continue to evolve and grow at the community level. In addition, it is necessary to continue working in collaboration with FAO to advance training on agricultural processes and animal care and also to continue with the adaptation and construction of agricultural spaces in each of the communities.
Finally, we would like to thank our sponsors for their support, which helps us to continue the work we do with the women of these communities and that, together with them, we can grow in multiple areas. We will keep you informed of our progress in the coming months.
