Health Insurance for Widows and Orphans In FCT-Abuja (GlobalGiving)
Report: Report on Health Insurance for 200 Widows and Orphans in Abuja
Period: December 15, 2023, to April 13 2024
Reported By: Widows and Orphans Empowerment Organization (WEWE)
Date: Friday, April 12, 2024
The objective of the project is to raise funds to enable 200 widows and orphans in Abuja to have access to healthcare services through health insurance. WEWE has raised 117 donations so far within a period of 3 years and 5 months (September 23, 2020 – April 12, 2024).
In the period reported from December 15, 2023, to April 13, 2024, WEWE received USD$100.00 donations from GlobalGiving and cash donation of N830, 000 (USD$664) from individual philanthropists within Nigeria.
Previously, WEWE has provided health insurance for 97 widows and orphans (55 in 2021, 26 in 2022, and 16 in 2023) – this is for both National Government Insurance and Direct Private Healthcare Schemes with the help of the funds received in the period reported from WEWE’s GlobalGiving page.
This USD$764 dollars received within the reporting period was used to provide health insurance for an additional nine (9) beneficiaries which is made up of three (3) widows and six (6) of their children in a private Reliance Health Maintenance Organization (HMO).
The reason for registering them in a private HMO is due to the challenges with using the government health insurance scheme which we reported in our previously report how children found it difficult to access proper healthcare and there was long waiting period of 3 months for registered into the scheme.
The names of the three (3) widows that benefited within this reporting quarters are; 1) Josephine; 2) Gift and 3) Adebayo.
1. Josephine is a widow with three children and abeneficiary of our private health insurance called Reliance HMO during this reporting period. Josephine reported that this new health insurance scheme is very good to her and her children because it gives quick access to healthcare and out of pocket expenses. The picture here is the son of Josephine Fawale, who is receiving treatment.
2. Gift is a widow with a special health need (Diabetic with wounds on her toes). She was registered into the Reliance HMO Scheme with the sum of N390,000 on December 12,2023. Gift reported that with this new registration, she is able to get quick access to healthcare and out of pocket expenses around her location.
3. Adebayo is a widow who had an okada accident which resulted in the dislocation of bone in her leg. She reached out to WEWE for support to enable her to clear up her hospital bills. WEWE supported her with the sum of N50,000.00 under the Group, Individual, and Family Social Health Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP) project supported by GlobalGiving.
At present, with the aid of the donation received from GlobalGiving and individual philanthropist within this reporting period, WEWE was able to register additional three (3) widows and six (6) of their children in a private HMO scheme called Reliance HMO, making it a total of 106 beneficiaries from the Group, Individual, and Family Social Health Insurance Programme (GIFSHIP).

Conclusion:
By the end of this reporting quarter April 13, 2024, WEWE has enrolled 106 beneficiaries out of the 200 widows and orphans with support from 117 donations received from GlobalGiving platform and individual donors outside GlobalGiving from inception to April 13, 2024.
We now have 94 widows left to be registered into the Health Insurance for 200 Widows and Orphans in Abuja. WEWE continue to solicit more support from donors to enable us to enable us to reach our target goal.
On behalf of all the beneficiaries, we thank all the donors who have been supporting this project on Health Insurance for 200 Widows and Orphans in Abuja
